We arrived after a 12 hour journey, but that’s another story! We were warmly welcomed and given our room keys. As dinner would finish shortly, we went straight to the dining-room, leaving the porter to take our luggage down to our rooms.
We were pleasantly surprised at the choice of dishes on offer. 4 meat and 1 vegetarian dish each night and only chips on our last night. A very wide selection of deserts to finish the meal. Compares very favourably with some Mediterranean hotels.
If you come to the Rainbow you may have a long walk to your room. Our room was one of the furthest from all the activities down a number of flights of stairs and along corridors. The porter kindly showed us an easier route via a fire door and through the garden to the front of the hotel.
Our room was quite large. The trouser press had come away from the wall, leaving a hole in the plaster. This was removed and the wall repaired without us asking for this to be done. There was a large walk-in wardrobe and a bathroom with toilet, washbasin and bath with shower.
If you turned the bath taps on full, the shower activated, resulting in as unexpected drenching, so the water had to be trickled in, but this was not a problem.
All the public rooms were decorated with Christmas decorations as they were starting their Turkey and Tinsel theme in November. This made these areas very bright and cheerful.
The entertainment was a little disappointing. On one night there was an entertainer who was quite good and he filled the ballroom to capacity. Yet on another evening, a singles disco night held in the club, there were hardly any participants.
Overall our stay was pleasant with very helpful staff on hand. We would be happy to come here again.

This is a dismal, decaying wreck of a place. Reception is dark and dingy but the true awfullness of the place is the rooms. Small, cramped, overstuffed with ancient furniture, much of it broken, beds a collection of lumps in what could have been a mattress once. Windows never cleaned. Bathroom grubby and dangerous, no hand rails, cold water tap often as hot as the scalding hot water tap. Food mediocre, eaten in restaurant with all the frills of a works canteen. Lift too small for 5 floors and frequently out of service. Pool OK. Entertainment either bingo or summer season crooner. The type of place that gives Britain a bad name.

Just spent five days at the rainbow hotel never again its a very old tired and dated hotel.
The food is very poor.
Room 412 is awful needs a full revamp.
The bar opens at 7pm and closes at 11pm calling last orders at 10.30pm,except wednesday when they have singles night for non-residents and national coach guests are encouraged to go on a

My wife and I, along with my wife's recently widowed sister stayed for five days at this hotel in March 2009. The hotel is very tatty from the outside and inside is not terrific either. In our bedroom the radiator valves were broken off so the heating could not be controlled. Because we went out every day we did not complain but they looked as if they had been like that for some time and you would expect the maintenance staff to have noticed. Our room was just about acceptable although the single beds were uncomfortable and the pillows too thin for our liking. In our bathroom cobwebs hung from the ceiling behind the door so cleanliness could be improved. My wife's sister had the adjoining room which was much better overall. On the plus side the food was excellent and the restaurant staff very efficient and helpful, necessary because of the unusual and slightly chaotic help yourself system and I mean help yourself, as you have go and collect everything apart from the cutlery and drinking water. On the plus side when you get used to it it does work quite well. The guests themselves cause problems by causing unnecessary obstructions when, for instance toasting bread and this should be better orgainised. The entertainment was fairly good, including the open to outsiders singles night, and the bar area quite comfortable. Overall it has a holiday camp feeling about it, not quite our cup of tea, but if you like that type of holiday you will probably like the Rainbow

We stayed here as part of a National Holidays booking, from the moment we got on the coach we had a great time.
Dennis our national holidays driver was the best. The hotel has lots of area's, so if you are not too good with stairs you must "ask" for low floor on your booking form.
There were a lot of elderly couples when we went & the stiars can be a problem for some, our room was clean, the towels were changed if you placed them in the bath, & the beds were comfy & clean.
The Hotel on the whole could do with re-decoration & the pool area tidying up a bit, but the staff & the food were fantastic, I would def go back again.
The entertainment staff were really good, never seen a better Tina Turner, the lady mostly in charge of entertainment put on a great show, shame really as not many people used it, Chris Chaplin was absolutely fab if you get chance to see him, you must go.
Apart from the hotel needing a total revamp, great holiday would def go back. And the little train that stopped outside the Hotel was great if you felt weary walking into the town...
