Its only 1 block from Times Sq, within walking distance to many sights and theres a subway nearby. We are returning to the hotel this October again for my 30th!
We got the cheapest deal I could find on http://www.hotelconnect.co.uk
Also check out reviews on http://www.tripadvisor.com and http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g60763-i5-New_York_City_New_York.html
NYC hotels are expensive and prices have increased for this year so be prepared to pay £150+ per night app.

Wellington Hotel, stayed Feb 06 not the best rooms and a bit dated but the location is superb the cafe downstatirs is the best I have tasted in the US.
Stayed at the Metro in New York (left a review on the hotel on this site). Very central, shops only minutes away, and the Empire State Building is almost next door. Don't know about family rooms, sorry.
Just thought of the perfect place for you...
Stayed in the mansfield about 3 or blocks from times square nice and central for there, nice clean rooms & free continental breakfast
which hotels are the best in NY
The Radio City Apartments come well recommended (see the City Breaks forum and check out Puddleducks review of her trip to New York) I have booked for March next year. They do book up early as they are very popular. You don't have to pay up front and can the cancel without charge up to 48hrs before if you find anything you like better.
