i am a bit worried about getting 'stuck' at ao nang beach and not being able to get back to our resort

Ao Nang is served by road as well as water. Only if you stay at Railey or Centara (even then this hotel has a walkway to Ao Nang) would you need to use a long tail in the evening. Most other hotels you'd take a taxi.
