My wife and I were quite tired after a day walking so went to the nearest place to eat where we were staying. Sadly for us it was the Hean Castle.
The food was disgusting at best. I ordered a Thai red curry which had no resemblance to a Thai curry as displayed on their menu. It was awful and came with a side salad which was disgusting as well. My wife ordered the 'chicken breast'. This was even worse and was just a small piece of chicken breast and wing that had obviously been reheated in hot oil and served as it was completely dry and crinkled. The same for the chips-- they were definitely refried. The 'peas' were cold and hard out of a tin. Small side sald awful.
The service was cold and unwelcoming and I was not surprised no-one came to ask if our meal was alright. I oredered a pint of Bass Bitter which was just going off as well. The place was also quite dirty. They obviously rely on unsuspecting holidaymakers as no 'locals' went in the place I later found out. Cards are not accepted and you are asked to use a 'link' machine to get cash to pay BEFORE they serve the meal. Of course, a charge is levied by the link cash machine. I really wanted to kick up a fuss and demand our money back but my wife was so tired and upset that she just wanted us to get up and leave and put it down to experience. I really hope no-one else has the same bad experience that we had.
Besides, you never know , perhaps the owner is unaware of his staff/kitchen problems... for extra effect I'd be tempted to sign it Gordon Ramsey !!!!
It doesn't sound like they will be in business long with that kind of service & product anyway.
The problem is that they probably depend on passing trade so don't bother about wanting customers to come again. It really was a very bad experience indeed.
We regularly go on day trips to Saundersfoot and never go to the Hean CAstle. It's had a poor reputation for a while. I'm sorry you had such a poor time as most places in Wales are much more welcoming and depend a lot on word of mouth - especially from tourists!
Thanks for that Helen. What is a pity is that I never read any bad reviews on the place. Hopefully my views will be read by many and that place will go to the wall. Hope so anyway! Spread the word around.
We are going to Saundersfoot on Saturday (please let us have good weather!) and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend)..
1) Good family restaurants (kids are 4 and 2)
2) Good pubs that allow familys.
3) A restaurant with fantastic food for our only adults only night out.
Many Thanks
Emma
Hi Emma .. in addition to this Saundersfoot topic, we also have a separate Tenby topic where you may pick up some useful info ..
A very good fish restaurant , whose name excapes me, could be called the Mermaid but not sure, is situated practically on the beach with upstairs seating overlooking the bay. Very good, in fact excellent, fish meals. reasonably priced and the portions are massive. I would not bother with a starter!
A good pub, again forgotten the name, is just off the main car park where the boats moor up.
Edited to remove repeat of previous complaint in this thread
