Book the gala meal in the hotel (which one BTW?). Generally the hotels have a coach to take you to a good vantage point (Montanha Restaurant is a great one, but don't spread the word :D) to see the best firework show on earth!. Local bars will be chocky full with locals. Anyway it will be impossible to get a taxi after midnight.

Okay, we'll have to look into booking it then, I think its the Hotel Girassol? but tbh i'm not totally sure as my Mam booked it.

As Dan says, book the meal.

If it is the Girassol then the meal is good, they then open the roof about 11.30pm and you all go up there for champagne. I don't think you would find a better view for the fireworks, it was fantastic up there. Words cannot describe these fireworks you just have to be there.....
