We used strawberryautos - car was a bit battered, but it did the job.

Welcome to Madeira. Have a look here at this link. There are many car-hire firms near the Monumental area; so you can pick and choose. However it may be cheaper (and safer ) to use the coach trips to see the island. Which hotel will you stay at as many habe their own free buses to and from Funchal.

thanks for advice. I'll check them out. Dan, we will be staying in a private owned house listed as Canico de Baixo. We will be sent directions nearer the time. Do you know this area? What do think it will be like at the beginning of march? Do you thnk that I'll need to pack winter woollens?
