Like any suggestions about which resort would be best for a couple that like to spend long lazy days on the beach but who also want a decent selection of tavernas/bars to spend their evenings in.

I would suggest Kokkari as possibly the best resort on Samos.
A couple of years ago, we did a two-island holiday - one week in Patmos and one week in Samos. We stayed in Kokkari and found a different taverna for each night. The harbour area is beautiful in the evening - very romantic! I would definitely recommend hiring a car to explore the island. Helen
