Hi Jim. Take a look at Sa Coma on the east coast, it is very family orientated. The Safari Apartments and, especially the Coma Gran, get good reviews. Sa Coma has a lovely beach and plenty of bars and places to eat. It is a little British, I suppose, but you can get to Cala Bona, Cala Millor and S'Illot either on foot or short taxi ride, if you fancy a change of scenery. If waterparks, Pirates, etc. are your thing, try Palma Nova/Magalluf, I think there is something there for everyone. Never had a problem with thefts (from hotels or by pickpockets) but I generally get a safe in the hotel and don't carry too much cash around.
One appeared to have his arms folded around some books but his real arm was in my bag trying to steal my camera or purse.
Other than that, take proper precautions and Majorca is lovely, I particularly like Puerto Pollensa because of the wonderful long sandy beach and very warm calm sea (well in season anyway )
Beautiful beach and a good waterpark not far away.
Stayed at Eden Alcudia, quieter, sort of midway between the busier Port and Bellvue areas.
Any questions just ask.
Going to Santa Ponsa this year...again to the quieter, more family friendly area. Its a first to SP so can't reccommend it yet.
What you really need to be aware of in certain parts of Mallorca is the scratch card touts who offer free holidays. This is a ploy which can cause untold misery by trying to get you to part with large sums of money to join a "Holiday Club". (Office based in Palma). If you are approached by these people(usually well presented, friendly etc etc. and often saying that they are conducting a survey for Majorca tourist board or Govt.) Just walk away, do not entertain them in anyway.
Mallorca is really great for your holidays, but be warned.. Enjoy.
I would say Palma Nova or Santa Ponsa would suit you very well. Both are family friendly resorts. They are not very far apart so if you go to one, you can always visit the other. There is a frequent bus service or a taxi doesn't cost very much at all.
One problem I did hear of last year, was at check in at a couple of hotels, and in the melee, people's smaller bags were being targetted, which presumably contained money. I heard of an instance where an elderly couple took the lift to find their room and were joined in the lift by a young woman. When the lift door opened, the woman swiped the bag, and "legged it" knowing the couple could not catch her. This type of incident can be avoided by general common sense, and making sure you do not leave money / valuables in such a way that they can be easily taken.
I go to Mallorca beacuse of its low crime rate - i haev 2 children one of them is 4 years old, he enjoys the beach, the waterparks, etc my oldest has been coming to holiday on the island since he was 7 years old and he loved it then and loves it now - we normally rent provate accomadation from http://www.ownersdirect.com or if we do stay in a hotel we stay at the Sol Mirlos/Sol Tordos, there entertainment programme for the kids is brillaint - they have air conditioning, clean rooms beautiful views, good variety of food at diner and breakfast and the pools were clean at all times and a lot for the kids and adults to do
With regard to crime the only incident I can recall was about 3 years ago - a little girl was looking for her purse. She'd been with her family and had put it down on the bench and then walked off without it. When she'd gone back it was gone (surprise surprise) and they found the purse empty further along the promenade and Mum was tearing strips off the daughter for putting it down and losing her money.
I actually felt like shoving my own oar in and saying that she was just as stupid for allowing said daughter to have her entire holiday spends (worked out at just under £100 at the time) in her purse in one go (she was only 7 or 8)! That was more down to the opportunist thief than an organised one but of course you should exercise caution whenever you're in a public place holiday or at home.
