Tipping is up to yourself get good service then tip If you dont (highly unlikly) then dont tip,, Take English sterling and a small amount of Turkish Lira, Exchange it at the Bank or the Post office in Turkey for the best rates, Do not exchange your money at Hotels or Commision shops as if you do you will get a smaller rate of return for your Pound.

l would Just like to know from people who have been there this year if they use more turkish lira or euros . As for tips is it true that this is already put into the bill.

Hi Ray316

We went in May and used Turkish lira all the time. We took GBP50 in YTL and used that on our first day or so, then used YTL from the cashpoints. The Post Office/Bank are the best places to exchange your GBP's if you take them with you.

Regarding tips - we tip if the service has been good which I have to say is 100% of the time. We have yet to see the bill with the tip already on it. We tend to tip 10% .

Have a fantastic holiday

Ray I wouldnt bother with euros . Take sterling and a small amount of YTL . Either will be accepted and change your sterling up as you go when you need more YTL. Whilst we normally go to the dalaman area I would of thought bodrum to be similar . Please anyone correct me if Im wrong . The exception would be the Antayla region where it is more European , hence the Euro being more commonly used and some more expensive trips i.e scuba diving where you are likely to be quoted in euros . In those instances all currencies will be accepted at a sometimes poor exchange rate .

i agree with lyn this is what i have done for years :sun2

we have recently come back from turgutreis which is near bodrum and although we didnt take euro or use it ,everything in the hotel was priced in euro, and out and about in the town they were pricing things in euro, so we had to get them to work it out in pounds and lira, which they did without a problem, but it was a bit annoying after 2 weeks lol, so its really what you feel happy with, i will always stick to sterling and lira as it just causes us more confusion :think

lyn i would say when we were at the aegean dream the most visitors were dutch, then british, followed by eastern countries like poland and russia, hence probably the pricing of everything in euros

we also leave about 10% tip on average if we are happy with the meal and service etc, this is just a guideline

Thanks for that info kim about changing GBP to lira in post offices/banks. So you get a better rate for the pound over there then. Does anyone know the rates in england and in gumbet :tup

Its worth noting though Ray, Gumbet centre doesn't have a bank or a post office. You'd have to go into Bodrum to change your sterling cash or travellers cheques at one of those.

There are change offices all over the place in Gumbet - just have a look around your first couple of days in resort. You will also be able to change your money in most of the grocery stores, minimarkets, bars, restaurants and hotels. The hotels usually give the worst exchange rates, and may charge commission. There are many other places that will offer no commission or fees to change your money.

Marks & Spencer are selling Turkish lira at 2.29 lira to the £ today.
Last week in Gumbet, the rate was 2.35 to 2.41 lira to the £.

So I'd say, change enough here to keep you going 24 hours, then change your sterling over there as you go. If you have a Nationwide flexi account, you can withdraw money from any ATM (and there are loads of those in Gumbet centre), without fees or charges, and get bank exchange rates.
