Hi and welcome to HT!

From what I have read, yes you are certainly expected to wear a dinner jacket/tux or at least a dark suit on formal nights on P&O cruises. However he may get away without it if you have dinner in the buffet rather than the restaurant, but he may still feel out of place elsewhere on the ship.

Agree with what Luci says.

The dress code usually applies in most areas of the ship.

When I was on Oceana, I would say that 95% comply.

My husband wore a suit on the formal nights and so did most others. A few did have tuxedos on but most went for the suit option which I feel is adequate enough. Some men went in shorts or jeans which I thought was very rude!!!

The great thing for blokes with formal night it's an easy option no thinking.

Down side is the extra clothes but for 4 night I would take the posh stuff.

Ship laundry are great so I allways put my formal shirts in for clean and press, costs less than a beer and save trying to keep them nice in a case.

The Tux comes up great in the ships cleaners but that does not get done every time.

For those that do not have a Suite, Tesco have a simple dark suite for about £20 that would do the job.

Also you can get a 'dinner suit' from Matalan for about £50.

I assume that it is suit and not suite that W/J meant
Yes and on most ships you can hire a suit on board but it can be more expensive than investing in something that the cruise bug which will I am sure will bite you.

My Son is a classical musician and when even when in Youth Orchestra's etc and he travelled all over the world with National Youth Orchestra's. We bought his first at M&S which I think then was round about £150 he is 37 now and this would have been 20 years ago.

A great source of finding great quality is in Charity shops. We didn't but you could pick up a top suit in immaculate condition for about £20-30 or less. I live in Harrogate and charity shop's will charge more but you can even find brand new evening dresses. Saw Wedding dresses in Bernardo's window given by Bruce Oldfield who was of course a Barnardos boy! I have no need for such but I went in of course to have a look and got a fantastic short cocktail dress I think I paid about £100 but a true designer dress brand new would have cost in excess of I am sure £1000 or more.

Do go and look in your charity shops wherever you live and you might be amazed what you can find. A friend of my daughters worked in London for Oxfam. Was able to buy a brand new designer wedding dress but had to have permission from Oxfam to buy it and they priced it not her as she was the manager.

Another source can be shops where you can take any type of clothing you either want to sell and they do this and you get I think 60% of what it is sold for and they have 40%. The price the clothing and we have one here in Harrogate and one of these days I must take things I have never worn and I like to buy shoes some are still in the boxes. Maybe I could get enough for my next cruise!!!!.
The items sold there have to be in pristine condition and dry cleaned before the accept them. Hats shoes bags costume jewellery and men and women's clothing. You can find great bargains.

Also I don't know if anyone lives near to a Outlet Shopping complex such as MacArthur Glen (York Shopping Outlet as it is now known as) such like. We have one at York and I might go there once or twice a year and I have had all sorts of bargains. Armani short dress for £70 Bally brown suede shoes priced at £120 for £5 yes £5!! My problem is that I live to shop but I defy anyone to find better bargains. I bought in Naples 2 beautiful Italian made jackets one linen and the other cotton heavy and really beautiful. 30 Euro for the linen and 34 euro for the other. My eyes are drawn to sale and if it says all at say £10 20 or in this case 30euro. Linen trousers at 10 euro! Other buys of course but I not telling anyone until I open the case and see what is in it.

Some great evening dresses are found on Ebay which I have never used for anything as I am scared to register just in case it all went wrong.
A Lady on my QM2 had beautiful evening wear ALL bought brand new from ebay shops and she was stunning and very beautiful as well.

Just get out there and have a look keep your eyes open and I am sure that like me you too can become an expert shopper.

Good luck and I hope that this may help some of you to find a bargain. Incidentally I flew with Jet2 with a 17K allowance going out I was 21K and coming home 24K or maybe even 25K. Was willing to pay the excess but each way I was not charged a penny' Lucky as going out just as we were waiting to go through security a voice say hello and it was a lady we know well and she was charge £12 for 2K over. We said nothing as she would probably have gone back and complained. A tip is MEN are normally more willing to let it go than women at check in.
In Barcelona on the return the security was a farce no liquids were asked to be put in plastic bags so were in the hand baggage. Men or anyone who bleeped had to take off belts even cigar boxes were going through just as they were in tin boxes. No jkt off no shoes off keys or ANYTHING.

Jet2 were fantastic to travel with and is in my opinion the best low cost Airline in terms of leg room and other service. I have flown Ryanair Flybe but we are not able to fly with easyjet from Leeds/Bradford but my Son has and he thinks they are fine. Jet2 are offering trips to the NY with flight and hotel but you can find it much cheaper with Taylor Made by booking flights hotels etc yourself.

Off TOPIC sorry Luci. Me I am just on a high after such a long holiday.

I thank you all for your replies my husband already has a dark suit so that is not the problem he was just not wanting to take it if not needed, as he is taking a linen suit as this is very light weight and as we are flying to Barbados to meet the ship weight is a factor.
