Hello
We are getting married on 23rd May 2009 and haven't decided where we want to go on honeymoon yet!
That's probably because I want it to be so special and perfect, and have very specific crieria for this (and hardly any money!)
-We want somewhere warm/hot
-MUST have loads of interesting things to do/see* - I HATE just lying there sunbathing all day!
-Great food
-History & culture
-Friendly, clean, safe, and nice luxurious accomodation.
-Just one flight, pref within 6hrs-ish but flexible with that (OH hates flying but will endure it)
*OK this is where it gets complicated! I am a walking contradiction because I hate sitting still and want to see & experience amazing things - but can't actually swim (so that cuts out a heck of a lot of holiday activities :() and realised half way up Snowdon that I am actually petrified of heights. Typical! I am OK with certain types of heights where I feel safe, but am clumsy and accident prone, so standing near an unprotected edge is the worst. Such a shame cos in theory I would love exciting mountain walks, but I just can't control the fear that grips me and takes over!
To give a clearer idea of our ideal honeymoon... we went to The Sonesta St. George in Luxor on holiday a few years back, and that would be absolutely PERFECT (if we hadn't already been there!!) The flights and accomodation were only about £400 each (1 week) and the hotel was so luxurious it was amazing! We had fantastic food every night, and during the day we went to see the Valley of The Kings, the temples, the tombs etc and saw the most amazing, mind blowing sights which I will remember forever. I just don't think anything else I could ever see would rival that - the awe of what people managed to achieve so many thousands of years ago.
The only drawback was, we went in June and it was about 48 degrees, which was ridiculous!
So, is there anywhere else in the world we could go that would be as amazing, without costing thousands of pounds?! We don't have a specific set limit but something under £3000 for 2 weeks for both of us inc spending money would be great.
Thanks in advance xx
Mrs Hi De Hi and myself had 6 days in Falmouth and luckily it rained every day!
Have only been once- funnily enough on my honeymoon- but perhaps you could look at Tunisia? I havent researched prices for you but it should be within your range, has lovely hotels ( a lot are AI) and some interesting day trips to go on.
A country with lots to see, including desert, beaches and ancient sites. There are many luxury hotels. It will be hot but not 40+°
Sorry about that, I guess I was typing it at the same time as Fiona posted.
It's a shame your other half doesn't want a long flight or I would say go to Mexico- the Mayan ruins, especially Coba are wonderful and you can do all sorts of 'adventure' trips through the jungles. Add to that the great hotels and it would make a superb honeymoon destination. It's about a 10hr flight and I would hope that if you are going outside of the school holidays you could do it within budget.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marrakech Not a large-budget palce to visit once you have paid whatever you want to splash out on your accommodation. I loved it. Stayed in a riad (budget variety)and thought that was a really different type of place to stay.
And there are plenty of up-market modern hotels in the new town, or more exotic alternatives in the older parts. No plugs here, because I haven't stayed in these particular places, but some indulgent exotic accommodation available. For example

Lastminute.com, etc have a range of accommodation available to have a look at too.
I will have a proper look in my lunch break
Most traditional holiday destinations dont tend to have the history/culture aspect.
Some suggestions.
Italy staying in more than one place say Rome and Sorrento
Israel/Jordan 2 center stay
A bit further away but Kenya/Safari
Istanbul followed by one of the resorts.
It is difficult to find one destination that has enough sights and things to see for 2 weeks
A mediterranean Cruise usually start in Majorca and take in about 5 countries in 7 days or more in 14 days:

Kind Regards

Phoebe, those places in Marrakech look absolutely gorgeous!
Definitely lots of ideas there to show to OH tonight.
Thanks Stewart for your suggestions - funnily enough, Italy was my OH's suggestion. I'll do some research on the others this evening.
Have to agree with Italy too.
I'd forgotten about Istanbul. Very romantic! The Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia and the Topkapi Palace are all great to see. I took my other half on a surprise trip for his birthday and we sailed up the Bosphorus to where it meets the Black Sea, and were the only customers in a restaurant eating fresh fish overlooking the Black Sea when we got there. We stayed in the Sultanahmet district. Very near the sights and lots of lovely old buildings and great cafes and restaurants.
Why not look for a cruise leaving from a port in the uk, load of cheap deals at the moment and you could get of at a different place every day, Cruises are not just for old people, Great food and you will meet lots of nice people or can spend time on your own. PM me if you wont any more info. GEL
