I have read a review recently which criticised a cruise line for not providing special lifejackets for children and it occurs to me that I have no idea what happens regarding children's safety. I believe I have seen an infants life jacket which attaches to an adult jacket but I couldn't swear to this and I am ashamed to say that in spite of being a fairly regular cruiser, I honestly do not know what happens about lifejackets for children. I am hoping to take my daughter and grandchildren cruising later this year and I really had better find out what does happens because I just know that will be the first thing my daughter checks when she gets to the cabin and I also know her well enough to know that she will only use proper equipment!!!. (I have a grand daughter who will be 3 in April!)
What I do know is that I have never seen a miniature life jacket in any cabin I have ever been in. Do the cruise lines put child sized jackets in the cabins where people have children and are there different sizes available and how does one know which kind one will get, if indeed there are separately sized jackets, or do parents have to provide their own and is there a kite mark that is acceptable to the majority of cruise lines? I am sure there are some people out there who can put me right on this very important issue! Thank you in anticipation
When we sailed with RCI before the ship even set sail there was a drill of what to do in this kind of an emergency explaining fully what to do, what point you are to meet at and what happens if your children are not with you. For example if they are in a childs club or elsewhere on the ship
Please dont worry, we didnt and by the time we had finished the drill we knew wht to do where to go etc in the case of an emergency. Oh and yes they do have childrens life jakcets on board. OUr two had one and they were in our cabin

Thanks for that reassuring info Debbie!
Each child also has a wristband placed on embarkation which gives his ID, muster station (lifeboat location) in case they were to be separated.

Is this on all cruise lines? I do recall seeing children wearing an identity badge on a string around their necks but can't remember on which ship! A non removable wrist band like they use in hospitals would be excellent providing the little darlings don't get anywhere near scissors
I've sailed numerous times with children, on RCCL, Princess and Holland America. They all do that and I would think that all others would. It's the same type of ID you would get in Hospitals, yes, with added info as to cabin location, muster station. There are so many kids aboard they always have suitable sized jackets.
If you need different sizes than are in your cabin your Steward should get them for you with no prob

Thank you Emedia!
Remember the jacket in your cabin is for use should you be there in an emergency,
I many cases you will go direct to the muster station and get issued a jacket there.
They have thousands of the things in stores all over the ship.
They have child sizes and life cots for the real small ones.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I suppose ultimately it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to ensure that their offspring are well protected in the case of an emergency but it is good to know that the correct equipment will be provided. I think this question cropping up will ensure that in future I will pay more attention to the lifeboat drill, especally with children in mind and of course the same goes for aeroplane safety drills too!
I keep an eye out for storage bins up on deck so that I know where to find a vest in emergency, assuming you might not get time to get to your cabin- although that's not likely.
What a good idea emdia. I never thought of that before but I will now!
