It really depends on what you want. If you've almost made your mind up to try Calangute, try it. What suits some people doesn't suit others.

It is very busy and a bit like Blackpool but hey I love a weekend in Blackpool nothing wrong with that.

I enjoy a couple of nights in Calangute, I love the hustle, bustle and all the noise and so turn a blind eye to the "not so clean" aspect of it.

Hi Shirley if its your first time and going to North Goa then Candolim has to be the one :) not so crowded as Baga &Calangute
why not split the holiday and also go South, Cavelossim is a good resort

In the opinion of you who hate Calangute, where would you suggest is the best resort?

I suppose most first timers are going to buy a holiday/package. There isn't a great choice of quality resorts at a reasonable/realistic budget.

In the North I would probably say Candolim BUT who knows what might happen later this year. If they plan doing something about the removal of the River Princess this year forget about Candolim. Guaranteed to make one almighty mess of removing that eyesore!

Thanks for all your opinions. What I rather fancy about Calangute, is the chance to mingle with the locals, walk down the same street as an elephant etc :rofl I like 'busy' but not touristy. When you say it's like Blackpool do you mean full of Brits and geared up for them.
Thanks again

Not quite "Kiss me quick hats and Bingo" yet !!!

It's extremely busy, not the cleanest town you will have ever visited.

You will see a lot of "tacky" souveneir stalls, but there are a few half decent shops.

As I said earlier I have to go into Calangute for a couple of nights to soak up the atmosphere and buzz of it all it's hectic.
Stay just outside Calangute as suggested, Arpora maybe, or Baga or Candolim. It would cost no more than 150rps about £2.00 to get to Calangute from any of the above in a taxi.

Baga sounds like the place for you, we stayed on Baga Calangute rd last year and loved it :sun2

We stay in Arpora and find it perfect, but we are quite happy to take a taxi in order to go out at night or to the further beaches. All the hotels in Arpora generally lay on a bus to take you to the local beaches if you want to, and then it's quieter at night time.

I love Arpora as well Miccie, not too busy or rowdy. Beautiful scenery and only a 5 minute taxi ride into Baga or Calangute.

Calangute is well mayhem. It would give you a real shock. The thing is you will soon get used to the whole Goan and Indian thing. We have stayed at The Nizmar and that gets really good reviews.

For a first timer Candolim may be a better option and I would certainly recommend The Highland Beach Resort.Very central with lots of facilities.

This year we are in calangute but will visit several restaurants in candolim.

Calangute is a short hop away in a taxi probably 100 rupees.

Whatever you decide you may well be hooked forever.
