Hello, i was reading through some other posts and saw that someone ahd said that the euro is taken in turekey, is that right ?
I live in southern ireland so it would be great as we are euro here
Are there any disadvantages though in paying in euro?
Many thanks
sandra
hi sandra
yes you can use the euro in turkey and a lot of resorts are priced up in euros too, they seem to love the euro over there

Thanks ellie, maybe we wont bother changing any into turkish lira then, as when i asked in the 2 main banks here they dont do that currency !!
if you want to change your euros then the best place to change to get the best rate is in a turkish bank i know if you change over a £100 you get a better rate its probably similar in euros, but most places take lots of currency and the euro seems to be their favourite, ive just booked to go to istanbul and everything was in euros, the med resorts use euros a lot too, but you will have no probs changing them, i bet most shops, bars, restaurants etc will take them too
Another idea is to open a Nationwide account to put your holiday money in. You can then withdraw Turkish lira (or pounds or euros if you really want to) from one of the many ATMs around (although you don't say where you're staying so I can't say if ATMs will be in abundance or not - they are in most resorts).
There's quite a few advantages to this. You're not carrying a lot of money around with you, you don't have to pay for a safety deposit box, you get a better exchange rate than at the cash exchange places and the Nationwide doesn't make any charges for using the ATMs.
I think it depends where you are staying as to how much the euro is accepted, although they will accept most currencies. Practically all shops will accept euros and so will bars if you ask them (though most bars and restaurants will give you the bill in lira first and then work out the exchange).
We have a house over in Turkey and use our Nationwide account for getting money - we've saved loads than if we'd taken cash and exchanged it over there.

Sandra I am going to the Parkim in May so I will be paying in TL as I have a Nationwide card.
Some prices work out cheaper by paying in the local currency and others dont.

Good choice Sandra, my favourite place in all the world is Gumbet - we go over there about five times every year and hopefully will part-retire over there eventually. The Parkim Ayaz is a lovely hotel, right on the beach and close to everything. They've done a lot of work on it recently and it looks really nice (it used to be two hotels which became one). Turkey will be very hot in July so drink plenty and slap on the sun cream ... even more if you go on a boat trip 'cos the breeze is very deceptive (I'm talking from painful experience here!!). Also be sure and have a Turkish bath, great - have it early on in your holiday as it prepares your skin for getting a fantastic tan.
I'm sure you'll have a great time - we first go to Gumbet in April, then we have flights booked for June and September so far but still on the look out for more. The only trouble is that work keeps getting in the way - boo

Hi Sandra,
Yes, you can use euros in Turkey or you can change them into lira when you get there if you prefer.
I'm sure you will love Turkey, Parkim Ayaz is a nice hotel right on the beach and Gumbet is very lively. I used to live there for a few years so if you want to know anything just ask

Hi Sandra,
Am also from Ireland, have visited Turkey for the last 10 years, we never buy Lira, we always use our Bank of Ireland Laser and Mastercards to withdraw Turkish Lira from ATM's in Turkey. We stayed in Bitez beside Gumbet last June and there are loads of ATM's there and the commission costs are small and you also feel more secure in that you don't have to carry much cash about with you. We always bring some euro with us to cover until we find an ATM to withdraw Lira.
Regards,
Tony
