Those were little pussycats compared to the ones I've just been playing with in Kenya!! There are actually sharks off the Turkish coastline but they are very rarely seen 9I've done 50 dives in the area and still hoping to see my first, be searching again in September!). It's been known to see Great Whites (Jaws!) around southern Cyprus and eastern Italy; and they are confirmed sightings. The Caribbean and our coast for that matter have plenty of sharks so I'd better not say anything else or you'll never venture near the coast again!

I hope not. I just wanted to show that the fish population around the Turkish coastline is relatively poor compared to other places and it's really not a problem to be in the water with them, even when there are large sharks around. They are generally more frightened of us than we are of them. They may get close and odd ones may even have a nibble (normally picking off what they think are parasites, they think they're helping us!), but they won't do you any harm and it's nothing to be scared of. I guess some of us were born water babies and others not.

PS I'd better not post my shark diving video when I was filming 12 inches away from a 14ft Ragged Toothed Sand Tiger Shark!

Dazbo, is that dive centre in Icmeler opposite Vinces, Demircouglu Apartments?

What training do they give you before going for a dive?

Excellent footage, looks lovely down there, thanks for posting the videos.

turkeyconvert,

That was European Diving Centre, now European Sea Sports. They moved from Icmeler / Marmaris in 2006 and are now based in Defneli. I did my PADI Rescue Diving qualification with them 5 years ago; they're one of the best training centres in europe and offer excellent facilities. It's just a shame there isn't more to see.

Can anyone go on a dive, or do you need to be qualified beforehand?

Anyone can go diving, with the exception of certain medical conditions, eg asthma. You can do a discover scuba day to give it a go where you'll go to a depth of approx. 5m under instruction. If you want to do it seriously, then you'll have to get a diving qualification from one of the recognised certifying agencies such as PADI, BSAC or CMAS..
