I have just booked a one week holiday in St Paul's Bay travelling out in August 2009. There will be six of us travelling, including my Mum who is 91 years old. I asked the travel agent if they could arrange wheelchair hire for us, but as we would be going during peak season, they said that they could request one but couldn't gaurantee that we would get one. They suggested that we sort out the wheelchair ourselves. I don't mind that - I appreciate their honesty - it would be dreadful if they promised us one then failed to deliver!
So my question is this. How do I go about hiring a wheelchair for Mum? Is is better to hire one in the UK and take it with us or is there somewhere at Malta airport where we get one?
I await with eager anticipation and all fingers crossed.

I have searched the internet this evening and thought that I would pass on what I have found out - it may be of some use to somebody else in a similar situation.
The British Red Cross can lend wheelchairs out short term. If you google 'red cross' you will find their site easilly enough. There are lots of local branches and there's bound to be one near you. They seem to be able to offer this service at no charge but will, ofcourse, accept a donation.
I don't know if this is the answer to my question, but it's a start!
Hope the info does some one else a little good too.

There is a place just off Buggiba square towards the cinema that hires out motorised chairs. They may also hire out wheelchairs? this place does car hire and taxis so it may be possible for you to hire a taxi from the airport with wheelchair?
Thank you for that m&n, Really appreciate your help.
hi there- i would recommend hiring in the UK before you go. i hired from Wheel Freedom- they delivered the chair to me and it was insured for international travel- they then came and picked it up. it saved the hassle of sorting it out abroad.
The place mentioned in Bugibba has wheel chairs and also up to last summer the place had wheel chairs on display for hire. Have you tried to contact the place?
We went to Malta a couple of years ago - staying at the Melliah Bay Hotel. Had a lovely time, but found Malta to be very hilly. If you do look at hiring a wheelchair - try and make sure it's a motorised one. It's likely to be really hot there and to be pushing a wheelchair around would be really difficult, I imagine.
Hope you all have a good time
