as for the fat old hippies, I'll let Chilly and Mike answer that :rofl
Sounds like you may not like north Goa. South Goa though is a lot more laid back but I'd have to leave that to the experts here for more info. If you have been to KS and found it too built up frankly you won't like the North. I can highly recommend Bali if you're looking elsewhere-but thats another forum. Have a look there though.
In India you could look at Kerala- some info on the India forum and a few Goa regulars can also help there

Did you miss out a word in your first sentence- as it looks like you only have a week?

Goa cannot in any way can be called "built up" It can at times be quite busy though.etween et
You don't say when you can use your holiday though. has to be said, the best time to go to Goa, is between the end of october to the end of march. Anything else is heading into or out of the monsoon season.
If you're looking for peace and quiet, then you should go to South Goa, if you want some night life, then go north.

I'm not an expert :D
But think the place you might find fits the bill, is Patnem beach in the south. It's small and quiet during the day, and when you want some nightlife, Palolem beach is just around the corner.
ps- not all old hippies are fat :)

If you're considering north (around Dec/Jan), then you might want to have a look around about Anjuna/Vagator/Arambol. Not package-tourist in the main for sure... and not a high-rise in sight (to be fair, that's not really Goa, full-stop). More younger travellers/stayers of mixed nationalities. Personally, find Anjuna a bit seedy (hassled to buy hard drugs non-stop), but places to drink/music playing. Unpredictable though what is on where, there's a lot of word of mouth to finding parties, which may start in the day and end quite early. Still, plenty of chill-out shacks. Anyway, do a bit of googling (including images) to see what looks like what you're after.

I'd echo these comments. The Baga, Calangute, Candolim area is mostly package tourists and Indian holidaymakers, and mostly of the older age group I would say, so probably not for you.
