Hi
We are staying near Welshpool for a few days at the end of the month. I think we've got our sightseeing plans pretty sorted but have not made any decisions about food yet. Can anyone recommend any nice places to eat in Welshpool or nearby? We're not after anything fancy - pub meals will do - but would like some personal recommendations if possible.
Thanks!
We found this place in a pub guide, when looking for somewhere close to Powys Castle. It's a lovely old half timbered pub in a pretty village just south of Welshpool. We had a lovely Sunday lunch there, very good standard of food.
Hi Maria
Graig Farm Cottages, July 2009 (INVALID URL
We spent 3 nights at Graig Farm Cottages at the end of July 2009. As there were only 2 of us, we chose the one bedroom Rafters Cottage and booked direct with the owner for a total cost of £253. The cottages are situated in a quiet area in the country, about 5 mins drive from Llanfair Careinion, which itself is about 15 mins drive from Welshpool. Our cottage had a good sized kitchen, bathroom and bedroom downstairs with a nice big lounge upstairs. We thought the furnishings and décor were very nice but found the lack of clothes storage a bit frustrating - a couple of hooks for hanging towels etc in the kitchen and bathroom wouldn't go amiss as well. The bathroom does have an over bath shower but it was very difficult to use due to the lack of a sensible place to hang the showerhead. It got quite cold one of the days we were there so we ended up having to use the heating, which worked very well. You can currently only get 4 channels on the lounge TV but hopefully this will improve with the digital switchover later this year.
We actually didn't spend a lot of time in the cottages as we were trying to make the most of our sightseeing time there. Places we visited in the area were Lake Vyrnwy, the waterfalls at Llanrhaer ym Mochant (INVALID URL King Arthur's Labyrinth at Corris, the Centre for Alternative Technology and Erddig (National Trust Property near Wrexham). In terms of eating out, we had good meals at the Spice:UK Indian Restaurant in Welshpool, the Dyffryn Restauranr just past Foel and the Lion Hotel at Berriew. There are branches of Morrisons, Somerfield and Sainsbury's in Welshpool if you'd prefer to cook for yourself, plus a Spar and Londis in Llanfair Careinion itself. Overall we had a very nice weekend at Graig Farm and would recommend it to anyone who wishes to stay in this area of Wales.
