Hi, Asleema, or anyone else who can help......not been to Tunisia for two and a half years

.
Back then my tipple was wine and I quite liked the Tunisian Magon. Now, however, I enjoy a Gin and Tonic.
Now.......question is..........can I get TONIC WATER in resort??????

Hope someone can help me, may have to be a DRY holiday otherwise. ha ha. Thanks.

I am quite partial to a G&T on the balcony in the afternoon and we could certainly get tonic water at our hotel in PEK and I don't imagine there would be a problem in general in getting it in any resort.

Happy drinking I mean holiday :cheers

Hi Elsa, i think you may be able to get tonic in the supermarket (Magasin General in particular) though I can't be sure. I love G&T at home but have never had it in Tunisia, mainly because I've heard bad reports of the local gin (and the price of imported) and only take out a couple of bottles of whisky to use as tips for the locals. I'm very partial to a nice bottle of Magon (or Vieux Magon which is even better) but have developed a taste for Cedratine this past few years. If you've not discovered it yet it is a lemon-based liqueur, 40% proof and far more to my taste that Boukhar or Thibarine. I recommend you try it in one of the bars before buying a bottle in case you don't like it.

Thanks Kiltman Graham and Aslemma for your quick replies. I will certainly try the Cedratine as I do like lemon, we are planning to take gin as our duty free, don't know if it will last a week, but hey ho. Yes Kiltman, I too like my G&T on the balcony in the afternoon. We used to watch the world go by at the Marhaba Palace, but going across the road to the Kanta this time. Won't be supping too much though..........need to be on the golf course by 8am :yikes

As you are staying in PEK you have Magasin General just near the arch by the entrance so you can try there for your tonic. You don't say when you are going, but bear in mind it is now Ramadan until about 21st September. Though this won't make any difference in the hotels, you will probably not be able to buy alcohol in the supermarkets. I got caught out in the MG in Sousse last year and Allah opened the heavens and drenched me for trying - had to grab a taxi back to the hotel and was still soaked to the skin. :rofl

It hasn't been a problem in previous years, as although locals couldn't buy alcohol during Ramadan tourists usually had no difficulty.

You can buy tonic water in the Big supermarket that's on the same side of the raod as the hotel Kanta but if you are buying it from the shop to drink in your room remember not to carry it in a plastic bag but to hide it in a rucksack, handbag or beach bag as the security guys in the hotel WILL take it off you......unless you are staying in the Residence self catering part of the hotel.
You will also be able to order it from the bars in the Kanta.
You should also be able to buy alcohol during Ramadan from the off licence in PEK.....it's to the right of the big arch past the supermarket.

Enjoy your hols wish I was back to the Kanta again!!

You used to be able to get it in the supermarkets in Sousse as well but they changed the rules last year. I didn't try PEK so they may have been different, though they are both Magasin General. :roll:

aslemma, I meant to thank you last year for your mention of Cedratine, I gave it a bash when we were in PEK and I enjoyed it and also Thibarine although our friends though Thibarine was disgusting :cheers

I'm with your friends regarding Thibarine Kiltman but than I don't really like the taste of dates or figs (it's almost sacrilege to admit that in Tunisia) :rofl

Thanks ScubaLeanna, Aslemma and Kiltman. Never gave it a thought about Ramadan..........just saw a fantastic late deal to Kanta and booked right away.

Have been to PEK about four times, usually stay in Marhaba, and normally go in May. Can't wait for 19th August.........HURRY UP.

Aslemma, how do you drink Cetradine....neat as a liquer or on the rocks, or with a mixer? I will certainly try it, sounds lovely. The thibarine not for me i think, sounds YUK. :rofl

You can certainly have Cedratine on the rocks or with a mixer but I always drink it neat, like Cointreau. I always bring some back with me as you can't get it in this country. Have a lovely holiday - it is extremely hot out there at present.

As leanna said if taking anything back to the hotel put it in your handbag as my first time staying at the Kanta Hotel we took coke back for the vodka and had it taken off us (thick or what) lol Didn't make the same mistake when taking the vodka back to the room. :cheers

Help please , i like a glass or two of wine of an evening , would you recommend it . also reading the other posts what is Magon or Vieux Magon , am only guessing , that its white and red wine , also what are the beers or lager like is there a choice ? is the ice safe to have in drinks , i have always been ok in Spain and Greece no upset tummy's By the way what is Boukhar and Thibraine

Magon is a red wine which is made in Tunisia and Vieux Magon is the same but slightly better. Tunisia also produces white and rosÃƒÆ’Ã‚Â© wines which I find quite acceptable though they aren't to everyone's taste. The local beer is Celtia, a type of lager. I'm not a beer drinker but am quite happy to drink it sometimes. Beware though that some Celtia in restaurants is non-alcoholic, but you will be told this if you ask. Imported spirits are very dear,

In the hotels I would say it's safe to have ice in your drinks as it's in the best interest of the hotel to use bottled or sterilised water for ice and washing of salads etc.....after all if everyone got sick it wouldn't be good for business.

Boukha is an alcoholic drink made from figs and personally i think it tastes vile but then I don't really like the taste of any alcoholic drinks. You should try it just to see what you think yourself. Never tried thibarine so can't comment on it.
