Baga and Calangute are very busy but Candolim is one big beach party on new years eve all the shacks are open throughout the season and will not shut at anytime, it is a massive firework display all along the beach, no you do not have to book unless you want a table, i would give south Goa a miss at the festive time as Candolim has it all, all the churches have things on mass etc.

if you want somewhere booking i can do that for you as i have a group of friends over at that time to and i will be working out the places to go around the middle of november. if you wish me to ask around let me know how many of you there are and email me by PM.

I have spent Christmas and New Year, in the North and South. My first New Years Eve, was on Candolim beach, and back up what Mike has said. It was my best New Year, the fireworks go on for ever, with magnificent displays from the Taj hotel and Kingfisher villa. The atmosphere is great, everyone joins in the celebration.
Down South it is very different, the only partying on the beach is in Colva, and then it's mainly domestic tourists. In Cavelossim 2yrs ago we rushed down to the beach, expecting it to be busy, but it was almost deserted. Most people stay in their hotels, or party at the restaurants. The same can be said, I think for the entire south, with Palolem the exception.
Christmas Eve is the main christmas celebration, the local catholics attended special services, and then it's off to party. I love Goa at this time, even the simplest of homes are decorated with twinkling lights, and nativity scenes abound. All without the over commercialism there is in Britain.

I am actually quite shocked, i thought the south would be similar to the North, in that people celebrate on the beach.

I think it looks like i will start to miver Mike for some accomodation info, thats if he doesnt mind

We arent really into the clubs and kareoke bars as such, we'd be happy at a beach shack watching the fireworks on the beach.

My OH wanted to go down South because he thought thats where all the nice accomodation is, so if i persuade him to come to Candolim (which IMO seems quieter than Calangute) then i will have to find a nice hotel.

We would be looking for a hotel or apartment with a seperate living room, and a swimming pool.

I will PM Mike now, as he seems to be pretty clued up on where to stay.
