Thanks for that,
AS you may have seen from my other post we are there over Xmas, perhaps you will be good enough to answer a few questions
How far is it from Albufeira to Ayamonte, distance and time?(public transport).
Will there be public transport over the Xmas period?
Will the tobaccos be open (normal opening hours)?
Are there any restrictions on how many can be brought over the border from Spain

We drove across Oddjob so can't help with public transport but I would imagine it isn't a straight run :que

We didn't bother going across this year to be honest as Spain also put their prices up this year. Gold Leaf tobacco went up to €44

Here's a list of the Spanish prices :- http://www.eurotabaco.net/prices_tobacco.php

Benson & Hedges are around 39 euros/200 pack. Lambert & Butler 36 euros/200 pack not sure on others. I think cubsur will know the journey time from Albufeira to Ayamonte & maybe what buses/trains to catch as he as got a good website on transport around the Algarve.

looking at those prices and the difference it probably not worth the effort of the trip to Spain, but still like to know if its possible on public transport!!!

Oddjob - the only place you can get to in Spain and back in a day by bus/train in winter is the town of Ayamonte. Aim for Vila Real de Santo Antonio, from where it's a ten minutes ride on the little ferry across the river. It is a long journey (about 3 hours) as neither the train nor the bus is particularly fast.

Example - bus Albufeira to Faro leave 0950 arrive 1035. Bus Faro to Vila Real 1100 arrive 1240. Ferry to Ayamonte (and it only runs once an hour in winter) 1300 arrive in Spain 1410 Spanish time.

You would have very little time there as the last bus from Vila Real with a connection at Faro for Albufeira is at 1730 and the last train at 1841. You would have to leave Ayamonte at 1830 SPANISH TIME at the very latest!

If you left Albufeira on the 815 am bus you would get to Ayamonte at about 1215 Spanish time. And that bus doesn't run on Saturdays, Sundays or Holidays.

There are also excursion day trips by coach to Seville from Albufeira etc. They tend to leave early in the morning owing to the time difference. You can get details at the various ticket shops and travel agents around town.

Let me know if you need any more details.

At the risk of contradicting myself, you can also manage a few hours on the large town of Huelva.

A direct bus leaves Albuferia at 735am, arriving in Huelva at 1145 Spanish Time. The return journey is at 1730, arriving in Albufeira at 1940 Portuguese time.

But I don't know whether Huelva has 5 hours worth of sights to see in exchange for a six hour round trip bus ride.

You have been more than helpful thanks,
Being a non-smoker myself ,I like to bring a few fags back to help pay for the flights, but I think I'll give it a miss.
If i ever need information regarding transport in the algarve I know where to go,thanks again
