We went in 2007 so the prices will not be valid, however one thing to watch out for was that they tried to charge me a fee to take in my video camera.

I refused to pay out of principle and I think my tour rep actually paid the fee himself as he came back with a valid pass to ensure the gateman let us in.

I don't think that would have happened if we had been with a major tour company!

The other problem we had was that we had probably the most informed tour guide who naturally wanted to impart his knowledge, we eventually wandered off and left him to it as we wanted to explore and look around. We still didn't have time to climb up any of the hills and have a look around.

It will be hot in August as it was still too hot in September.

It's quite common in a few countries to have to pay to take a video camera into historic sites. Doesn't matter if you are solo or with a major tour company..

mari,

It depends on the specific trip you go on, but the full day excursion including a visit to a cenote, lunch and drinks is £60.50 (Chitchen Itza plus). I went in September, it's a long day (3 hours each way by coach) but well worth it. You can take still cameras in free of charge, but video cameras are 50 pesos extra. It was 104f with 90% humidity when I was there so take plenty of water in with you (the guide will give everyone a bottle), it's noticably hotter than on the coast. Tulum is a nice 1/2 day out as well.

Don't forget to check out Xel Ha and Xcarat, both of which were excellent days out.

I did word my earlier comment slightly badly as it was the rep actually paying the fees himself that I meant would probably not occur with the main TOs.

Dont forget to take a hat, it will be that hot and there is not much shade. If you forget on the day, there are some craft stalls and shops outside the entrance where you can buy one before you go in.
