Has anyone any advice about where to go in mid January 2011 that will be warm and relaxed but not too expensive (credit crunch!)? Ideally a hotel with pool, preferably not too strict (being able to go topless would be a plus).

Well of the canary islands they will be warm and quite near, Gran Canary has Nudey beach too in Maspalomis so that might suit too 
Don't think I have been anywhere in the Canary Islands and not been able to go topless.
Gran Canaria and Tenerife would be a good choice as usually Lanzarote and Fuerteventura can be windy and a bit cooler but I wouldn't rule them out.
Depending where you are flying from have a look at the Monarch Cosmos, and Thomas Cook websites as their prices are usually good.....Caz

Well when I was there last my son was about 12 and we went to the market at Maspalomas, right near the beach and we strolled down on the beach toards to sea front completely missing the signs (honestly) and before I knew it there were naked chaps and chapesses - my sons eyes were out on stalks. 
Mine is 24 next week and still would have the same reaction
I think Fuerterventura has nuddie beaches as well, at the jandia resort, fairly popular with Germns and Scandinavians and I think there are some nice and good value hotels in that resort. might be worth reading the fuerterventura forum for ideas.

Florida or the Caribbean after the Christmas/New Year rush has subsided?
Your are so right, the main reason for going then was to try to miss the crowds! Caribbean may be a bit pricey for us sadly...
