Have a Nokia C6 with a sat nav from OviMaps. I can set Paphos as a destination from my home town but my question is this, will it work in Cyprus and will I be charged for using it?
Can any body help?
Thought I'd ask on here as I'm sick of listening to the T MObile tune whilst holding for hours
Cyprus is in the EU - and so the roaming data charges aren't quite so horrific as they are elsewhere in the world. Also you should download into your phone the maps of Cyprus using a PC and the OVI application BEFORE you go there. If you do that, and are careful about the settings on your mobile so that it only does a data connect in order to speed up the GPS fix, that will only do a tiny inexpensive data download.
However - I do have to say - I'm not too happy with Nokia OVI maps software. They keep changing the user interface with every new release, they introduced new bugs on the latest release which can cause your mobile to lock up in maps, and on the latest release they have actually eliminated the availability of certain previously available maps - notably Tunisia.
I'm going there soon so I'm not pleased!
I'm only gonna use it to get to Nicosia, other journies will be follow the orad and see where it takes us.
Thanks for the advice.
A6 motorway from Paphos. Between Limassol and Larnaca take the left fork onto the A1 motorway takes you all the way into Nicosia
Thanks pubdog, saw that route on the map and thought "bet it isn't as simple as that" but sounds that way from your description.
Yes - the roads there are excellent and well signposted. And if you have aircon - you enjoy the trip there.
But then you have to park the darn thing......
I reckon I drove around for about an hour, getting hotter, dustier, and more and more frustrated.
I then gave up - and went back out into the countryside, and back to the coast.
I went up by bus to Nicosia a day later
- and really enjoyed walking around, the cafe's, the sights, and the excellent Cypriot wines.
hic!
Alternatively, you can drive over the bridge and take the narrow road that is bears very slightly left. Keep on going and you will see a P for parking sign pointing to the right. Follow this road a short way and the Parking place is a tight left - it's a mult-storey (underground) car park. If you exit by Macdonalds you're on Ledra Street (the main shopping street) and from there you can cross over on foot into the occupied North if you so wish. Just make sure you have your passports with you.
Some great "designer" shopping to be had in the occupied area (only a handful of streets but loads of shops) and no need to pay designer prices. My "Gucci" bag cost me €18 and they had some fab woollen scarves in boxes for €10 which make great presents.
If you don't fancy crossing but want to know or see a bit more of the history, you can go to the museum that's upstairs in Debenhams on the same street.

And I'm amazed to find that Nokia have removed Cyprus from the GPS application on the phone.
It's gone! I checked the Internet and found that this is apparently "due to pressure from Turkey" !!!
Here's a link

Has anyone else hit this issue yet?
however this year I hadn't been thinking about internet use and brought the new phone out... same thing with text/pic messages (plenty of), then checking facebook and emails..... after 3 days I'd wiped out £70 !!!! (it also has its own background programs that check/update over the net every so often so it kept draining the money until I'd switched them all off !)
you have been warned...
I used mine once but couldnt get GPS, we were lost in Troodos and I tried to find out where we were. Found our own way out eventually after finding a really rickety shingle road, it was like something out of I'm a celebrity jungle but we did see lots of wildlife. It did log on eventually when were were back in the land of the living. Used it the once to get back to Paphos and also used it for e-mails and facebook, bill when I got home.....an extra £3.00, yes £3, couldn't believe it but did not query it...just in case
