Not long now till I go to Malta (thanks to all who helped me narrow down my hotel choice), and was wondering if anyone on here knows roughly how much it would cost to hire a taxi for the afternoon, for a DIY sightseeing program?

I have done this in a couple of places before, and it was worth it, but not having used taxis at all in Malta (except for an airport transfer that was included in my package) have no idea if it would be prohibitively expensive here. I'll be with a friend, so would be sharing the cost.

I've seen the hop on / off bus tours, and we'll almost certainly do that, but like the idea of total freedom of creating our own itinerary for another day. I found that the organised tours, as is typical everywhere, generally didn't allow enough time at some of the stops - and since these can be quite pricey, thought the taxi hire might work out comparable in price. (Realise of course that we'd have to pay extra for any entrance fees etc).
