I would be inclined to stick with free WiFi hotspots....

All Mcdonald's and Starbucks have them plus a number of bars are in on the act now too.

You can buy a sim card from Cyta or MTN for varying reasons:
Someone who comes back every few months can purchase a PAYG simcard with a designated number. Once the card has been topped up after the initial credit expires, the credit will last for 12 months. If there is no further top up after that time or phone useage - that's it, the card expires.

There are also "holiday" simcards which are valid for 4 weeks, can be topped up during that time - but they expire after the 4 weeks.

This page gives some more info as I don't have all the details but the standard PAYG simcard is approx €15 with about €5 credit and a bunch of text message credit.

You can pick up simcards in either the outlet shops or most peripetero's (ΠΕΡΙΠΤΕΡΟ), otherwise referred to as kiosks (small corner shops/newsagents) so you probably won't need to look too far.

There's a periptero on almost every corner!
