buying a car here is a nightmare. First you go to notary, then to traffic police and maybe tax office to get all the documents in your name. The price of a rust bucket is extortionate you will probably be better off buying new. if you have someone who can help you its worth paying a few bob for their service.
We bought a second hand car from a dealer. They tend to be a middleman and sell vehicles on behalf of the previous owner. Gaurantees etc are not common for second hand. Our man did put one or two things right after our test drive.. I think that what you see is what you get
We were suprised how expensive second hand is in Turkey but I think that they do hold the price. We did not have much success in getting discounts from anyone.
The paperwork is horrendous. There are people who earn aliving doing all of the running around for you. It takes them all day. Police station, (Yabanci) foriegner plates, tax searches etc. Most Turks use them as well. You will need to make sure about the MOT and exhaust test.
Before you part with any money you have to search for any debts or traffic offences aginst the vehicle. if there are any and you buy, you inherit the outstanding offences.
Hope this helps you to at least get started. No doubt there are other forum members who can also advise.
Expertly put apollo... straight forward if you don't have to do it yourself... I know a guy called Umit who does all for you in marmaris....
Many thanks for the info, I will discuss it with my husband - looks as thought it maybe better to keep renting!!! If we do decide to go ahead though, I might ask you Chelsea Boy for details of your contact in Marmaris.
There is a Turkish equivalent of Auto trader, this shows vehicles for sale from all over Turkey. It does give you an idea of prices before you start looking.
Many thanks Apollo II. Next time we go over we will get the magazine.
Also might be something elese to think about, If you own your car only immediate family will be able to drive the car, friends can drive it but if stopped can face an instant fine, and the car put in the pound until you the owner can retrieve it, and pay yes, yet another fine!!! also, as you will be showing the world that the car belongs to a foriegner, they will be more inclined to stop you!!
You've guessed it I have been the butt end of all this!!! So unless you reside in Turkey permanent, Hire a car it will work out cheaper in the long run, but as I am here permanent, if I want my car then this is the price I will have to pay.
Hi is this the same for motor bikes / scooters ?
