Corfu - Whats its like and what is there to do?

Hi All

I'm new to this forum but have already found it a great source of info on holiday destinations

I've got a few questions I'd like to ask about Corfu and would appriciate all you Corfu goers knowledge

Basically I'm planning a 2 week holiday for September 2006 (yes I know its a long way away :()

Now there are 7 of us going 3 couples aged 20 - early 30's and I am taking my mum along who will bless her be 50 next year but shes young at heart and deserves a holiday as she has not had one in 30 years

!

Question one The Resort

We're not after a 18 - 30's style holiday we are after a nice up beat holiday resort as a base one which has a good variety of foods places both british and greek and a nice selection of bars i.e A resort which will last us 2 weeks of eating and drinking out in the evenings.
So any suggestions as to what resort we should stay at? From what I have read in the hol brouchures Diassas and Sidra seem sort of like what were looking for so has anyone been there.

Question Two Corfu What is there to do

Seeing were staying two weeks is there going to be enough to keep us all amused as were not really the sort of people who like lying on the beach all day

.
We intend to hire a couple of Jeeps for about one week so we will have the opportunity to explore but where's the best places to go. Also I susept we'll go on some excursions so is there any which come recommended

Question Three Horse Riding

Myself mum and one of my friends love to horse ride so is there any riding stables which come recommmended

Kassiopi is nice, small harbour, plenty of bars and tavernas. Sidari, personnally I would not go, been there visiting whilst in Kassiopi. Roda is ok also Just come back from St. George South, nice but maybe too quiet for you.

What about having a look at San Stefanos. Horse riding, good places to eat beautiful beach plenty of boat trips and if you want you can go into Sidari in the evening its only about 15mins away plenty of night life there if thats what you are looking for.

Hello, I too would not recommend Sidari, we are in our 60's and went last year after a 23 year gap, did'nt find it Greek at all, food you could get Indian, Chinese, Italian, even a MacDonalds, but not many Greek tavernas serving Greek food.
Corfu town is very nice and you can get evening shopping excursions, San Stefano although not stayed myself always seems to go down well with the tourist and I beleive there is horse riding there. Friends who live near Benitsis say that area has been cleaned up and there is a lovely marina now, lots of shops, taverna, going back 23 years ago there were boat trips around the Island stopping off at 2 or 3 different places for a morning break and then lunch left about 10am got back about 6pm, was very cheap then but the Euro has altered all that, there is some really nice places on Corfu and like anywhere else some bad ones, but first impressions count, so I hope you get many replies so you can form your own opinion.

The places mentioned sound lovely. I've only ever been to Crete and absolutly adored it but I am told to experiance the other islands aswell hense my questions about corfu.

I have already posted some questions on a thread in the Rhodes section and its going to be a toss up between the two islands I think.

Is there anyone who has experiance both islands? And which ine did they prefer :?:

Yes have been to both Islands, but Rhodes was a long time ago, it is very nice lots of places to see, lovely beaches, loved the old town of Rhodes,
also remember it being tremendously hot, out of the two thing I prefer the Ionian Isles so for me Corfu, think the people are friendlier.pojo

Have been to Corfu and Rhodes amongst other islands. Like both, on Rhodes we stayed many years ago in Falaraki in May it was very quiet then, changed a lot now I believe, would not go back there. Also stayed in Lindos, really pretty, lovely beach. No traffic, very narrow streets with lots of little shops, lovely places to eat, rooftop tavernas. I am sure you will come to a decision as to where you will go.Skiathos is also nice, we like this as it has a harbour, somewhere to people watch. Lovely beaches.

I have been to Rhodes (Falaraki)Crete (Stalis and Almirida) Zante (Alikes) and Corfu (San Stefanos). Corfu we have been to several times and it is a place we have come to love and go every year. The other Islands all have there own charm and differences but Corfu somehow seems more of a relaxed Island and is somewhere I could easily call home. The best thing to do is try the different Islands and make your own minds up as everyone has different tastes and preferences.

corfu is a beautiful place with fantastic people, i would ighly recommend it, all i would advise though, is that you give kavos a wide berth, the wider the better....it is the epithany of everything wrong with holidaymakers....loud, brash, dirty, full of drunken yods and to be quite honest, less enjoyable than a trip to the dentist. if you steet clear of this resort, you will probably have a wonderful time in corfu.
