Travelling to Puerto Rico in August and want to see a bit of the island. Would appreciate the best way of travelling around. Transfers are NOT included from the airport. Is it best to hire a car from the UK for the week, hire one from the island for a few days or just use taxis?

Taxis are fine.
A taxi from Las Palmas airport to Puerto Rico last week was about 47 Euros. I think thats one end of the island to another.
I was there last week and taxis were more than enough for getting around Puerto Rico etc.
If you're planning on travelling around the island a bit more though then it might be worth looking into the prices of hire cars. I can't help you with that.

its usually cheaper to hire a car online before going, than to hire one when you are there. and you often get a better price if you hire one early than to wait untill the last minute.
