I went to Grado but just for a day trip. Really liked it. Very interesting, archeologically and historically. It is known as a type of mini-Venice because it is built on a lagoon, similarly to Venice. It is close to Aquiliea which was one of the largest cities in the Roman Empire and has some great ruins. Lots of German/Austria tourists. Not really sure what particularly you want to know about it, but I thought it was a nice place. A bit sedate though... not a young person party type of town - the younger folk tend to go to Lignano.

thanks for the reply. I have found a hotel there which is suitable for people with disabilities (something quite rare in Italy). What I wondered was is it reasonably flat? Is there a good choice of restaurants? and are there many places around the area to visit. I noticed it is quite close to the border with Croatia and I also would like to know if the countryside around there would be worth visiting.

It was a couple of years since I was there but there weren't any hilly bits that I remember! It might be worth asking the hotel too about that but I think it's flat judging from what I remember. There are some wonderful places to visit nearby. Of course, you aren't too far from Venice or Trieste. I really liked Trieste as a city and it has a beautiful castle nearby. It depends if you have a car or not for ease of access as the railway station isn't very near to Grado itself but if you have a car you would have no problems. Aquileia is very close to Grado and it's a pretty town that has lots of roman remains. Actually, if i remember rightly, it was the sacking of Aquileia which led to the founding of Grado (the people fled to the coast) and from Grado, when it became overcrowded with refugees, the boats set off and founded Venice. Something like that anyway!

I found a website that probably explains all the basic details in English http://www.gradoit.it/inglese/home_turista.html

I don't remember what or where I ate when I was there but I have no doubt it is packed with restaurants and pizzerias.
Hope that's helpful.
