Hi,
On wednesday i am going to lake como and staying in the resort of cadenabbia at the britannia excelsior hotel. Can anyone reccomend anywhere to visit on the lake or in the surrounding areas?
Thanks
Visit Como itself, Bellagio and if you go to the top of the lake, the Abbey of Pione. You might like to stop off for a drink and a wander in Argegno, and my favourite hangout (revelation coming ....) Torno, where the meals at the Albergo Belvedere are out of this world - try their Spaghetti A La Belvedere and try to guess the secret ingredient. Because of the lack of boats, you might be advised to go for lunch. You can take the funicular railway from Como (turn left once you get off the boat and follow the harbour round) to Brunate - great view!
Once in Como you could take a train into Milan - either from the Como Nord private railway or Como S.Giovanni with Italian State Railways.
You can also take a day trip via Como to Switzerland, visiting Lake Lugano and the Centovalli railway in the mountains. The tourist office and the lake navigation company will have details of this.
Via Como you can also take a regular train to Lugano and Bellinzona, two beautiful towns in Italian Switzerland (but don't forget that Switzerland is pricey!!!).
Hope this helps - but really you should consider this area as a place for relaxing and 'chillling out' - oh and take a raincoat because anywhere Alpine can have sudden showers and thunderstorms!
Central Lake daily boat tickets are good value. As well as Bellaggio you can visit Varenna (2 villas and a castle) and Lenno (another villa). Some places close on mondays
Villa Carlotta is an easy walk from the Hotel and is well worth a visit.
It is pleasant strolling along the roads and tracks near the Hotel. A climb to St Martins chapel provides spectacular views but takes an hour or two.
