We went to the Qwara Palace for a week in January, a couple of years ago.
They provide holidays for SAGA aged people, with all the associated activities/entertainment during the day and in the evenings.

January can be warm but there is a chill at night. All depends on the wind! You may be unlucky and have overcast days and rain or it may be a pleasent sunny 65o-70o f. So keep your fingers crossed

the buses switch to a winter timetable and finish earlier then their summer timetable but there are still plenty of buses.

There will be plenty of open bars in Qawra and Buggiba so don't worry too much on that point. We are over there for the new year so we too will be hoping for good weather. Hope you have a nice time no matter what the weather is. I know we will!

Hello sue, I have been to Malta twice over the last few years at new year, the first time I went it was warm most of the week I was there about 20c and had a great time getting round all the sites, but last new year what a change it was cold, wet and not very nice at all, I still got about as I had the right clobber. As with all places in the Med at this time of year you just get what you get, the one thing with Malta if the weather is a bit on the wet and cold side you can still get to see all the sites.
As for the bars most are open but may not be full, buses run just the same, but be aware that on new years day they do go of for a few hours mid day so don't get stranded a long way of from your hotel that day if you do go.

Thanks for helpful comments.I am still unsure whether it will be Malta or perhaps the Canaries.
Four friends went to St Pauls Bay in August and came back with lots of negative reports about Malta mainly about all the rubbish and also poor food in their hotel, plus it was very hot.
I think they have put my husband off but I read all the favourable reports on HT and think I would like to give it a try. Anyway we have 2 weeks in Benidorm next month so will decide after that.

Ciao Sue, out of interest which hotel did your friends stay in in St Pauls bay ?, also wouldn't worry to much about them saying that Malta is hot in August so is most of the Med I think most people would see this as a positive not a negative 8) :sun

Hello Sliema2
the hotel was the Karanne and it was mid September not August when they went and were not expecting it to be so hot then as they like to do a lot of walking.
We did have a holiday in Sliema a few years ago staying in the Preluna Hotel,we had a room with no outside view and were most disappointed and felt like 2nd class visitors in this smart hotel.
I still feel I would like to re-visit some of the places we visited (particularly Gozo) and try the nightlife in Qwara /Bugibba
