I've been to the Brixton Academy a few years ago, I'm assuming it's the same place. Personally I wouldn't let my daughter go home alone from there, the area was pretty run down from what I remember and I can't recall how far the tube was as we drove down

josie jump.

thanks for that. i must admit i did start to panic when my daughter mentioned it was in brixton. its the same place that you have been to.

we may possibly go up with my daughter and her friends then spend the night in town and meet them later.

can you tell me anything about the place? anything is better than nothing.

Ive been to the brixton acadamy quite a few times. its about a 5-10 min walk from the station this part of brixton is not as bad as other parts of this area but i would not be happy letting my daughter (if i had one  ) go unless she was well looked after (how old is she?).
Brixton can be a bit dodgy at night and you do need to be quite street wise having said that if she was going in a big group then i would say its ok.

jessop.

thanks for that . i'll be honest i did not put my daughters age as i didn't want this to turn into a debate as to whether at 15 she should go or not.

if my daughter goes there will be four of them going. three 15 years olds and one who will be 16.

at the end of the day my hubby and i are more than happy to go with them and leave them at the academy but i suppose what concerns me is whether it is a suitable place inside for someone of this age!!

i've looked at the website and it sort of looks ok but deep down i worry myself silly about all the other people who go.

hey medot dont worry, once inside they will be fine! the acadamy is a very good venue and has very profesional security (they are actually nice!) aaslong as you can take them and collect them at the end everything should be fine!just bare in mind that when you go to pick them up there will be a lot of people leaving at the same time so make sure you get them to meet you on the steps outside, even pick a particular door to meet them by just to make sure. also do you have mobile phones ? just incase as it will be very busy after the gig.
good luck hope your daughter has a good night out.

also do you have mobile phones

jessop is that a joke. my daughter loves her mobile more than me :bawl . she takes it everywhere and i mean everywhere.

thanks for your imput because i do feel happier now. i've just told her that if she can organise it she and her friends can go. shes well happy. one again thanks. medot.xx

hey no problem. let us know how it goes afterwards.im sure they will have a great night
one of my flat mates is going there tonight to see system of a down and she is a well seasoned gig junkie and she has just told me that the academy is one of the best and safest venues in london!
good luck mate 8)

sorry jessop i'm back again!

can you tell me what sort of booking tickets i should go for. from what i can tell the downstairs is just a floor with no seats where everyone stands. does this get too crowded?

it says if you are 14 and under you should get tickets for the circle but this is unreserved seating or standing at the back. do you know what this means. my daughter really wants to be downstairs with the crowd but again i'm not sure........ parents/children/headache!!!!!!! medot.xx

One very important point ive just thought of, check that its not an over 18's gig other wise they wont be allowed entry!
yeah what it means is that if you are down stairs it is standing only (no seating) this is usualy where you want to be as you can get alot nearer to the stage etc. downstairs is massive and holds alot of people and the whole area slowly slopes down towards the stage.
up stairs or the circle is seating only which is ok (if you have quite young kids or you dont want to be in the thick of it) but to be honest most people will be buying tickets for downstairs as this is really where you want to be.
no ive been to some really big gigs at this venue (fun loving criminals, straycats, death in vegas) and have never found it too be to crowded, it really is a big venue and unlike some in london they do seem to know what they are doing and can honestly say ive found them really organised, proffesional and although it gets busy ive never found it too much (i could get served at the bar within 3-4 mins at the busiest gigs, not that your daughter or mates will be  )
i would highly recomend buying tickets for downstairs as then you really do feel more involved, its not going to make much difference safety wise
do bare in mind though at a lively gig things do tend to get a bit energetic near the front of the stage so tell em to bare that in mind
Good luck hope all goes well if i can help you anymore dont hesitate to ask.
let us know how it goes though

Hi Medot,

I use to go to the Brixton accademy when i was 17-18 to all night dance events - it was fine inside very nice staff, the area around is a bit dodgy but no worse than in other towns. Ive got friends who have been recently who said there was no trouble. Id personally drop them off and meet them after, do as Jessop says check its not an over 18s event - use to be when i went.

jessop and alit.

thanks for all the help. checked the website and it seems for this particular concert escorted under 14's are allowed in. i will double check though before getting tickets.

unfortunatly my daughters friends parents are not happy about the girls going even though we have said we would take them!!! so at the moment it could all fall through which would be a shame, i'll let you know the outcome. medot.xx

that would be a shame all i can suggest is that if they cant go perhaps you could go with her? i know its not cool to go with your parents but at least she gets a chance to go and you could also earn some "cool points" from your daughter. and i bet you will have a really good time with her!
ask her what she thinks? im sure the fact she can go even if you go with her will be netter than not going and also then you know that you have nothing to worry about!
i really hope our daughter goes as these things are important when you are a teenager

oh jessop you have just brought a big smile to my face. thanks so much for that.

when i told my daughter that she could go if we went up on the train with her well face pulling or what. the thought of me now saying to her "yes you can still go but we're going in with you" :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl . i can just image the reply. to be honest there is no way on this earth that i could sit or even stand though a performance of "my chemical romance"!!!!!

whatever the outcome my daughter will have next years V festival here in chelmsford (where i live) to look forward to. medot.xx

youve got me laughing too! :rofl the v festival is really good (went back in 1997) and had a great time 8) anyway take care all the best for now

I have actually purchased tickets for the same concert in November but at Portsmouth. She'll have a great time! But the arena your talking about is pretty good, I found that the main ones are very well looked after and security tight. The only exception I had was for the Princes Trust concert, where there were alot of attacks and bad management. I think that you would be fine though with your choice.
Reply
To be honest I wouldnt recommend it, I have been to loads of concerts and especially ones of this nature have mosh pits and 15-16 year olds pushing each other and smoking in your face. I even got kicked in the head by a crowd surfer! Dont get me wrong the atmosphere is better down there but for a 14 year old, maybe not 2 wise. Very hot which means they would probally prefer to sit down after an hour and thats before the band even starts playing. But why not they are only young once! Its an experience, its not as if they are seeing slipknot, now that WAS an experience!

well after a lot of thinking......sold out dates...daughter is finally going in january. its a kerrang tour. shes so happy....especially as i'm paying!!! medot.xx
