We were in Calabria in September, as we had decided to get married in Italy. We stayed in Praia a Mare, which is a typical charming Italian little seaside place. I can thoroughly recommend Calabria, so much so that we are heading back there next May!! You are also next to the region of Basilicata, where you can visit the breathtaking Maratea, which is not to be missed. The prices in Calabria are, we found, considerably cheaper than lots of other parts of Italy, and the people are wonderful.
2 Things to bear in mind though..
1) As it is not touristy at all (to us, this was wonderful), you will find that the people there speak little to no English, therefore converstational Italian is a must, to get by.
2) You will most definately need to hire a car. We were a bit nervous about the drive from Naples, but that was fine, just one long motorway, but some of the roads in Calabria are rather windy, so not for those of a nervous disposition!
All in all, though a breathtakingly beautiful place, and as of yet pretty undiscovered, although for how long, is anybodys guess.
Good luck
