I don't know how you would come on with this Bob. I have a few friends that moved out to Spain and they came back to England to do their driving lessons and tests. Because they are UK citizens still, they had to have UK provisional licences, so could only learn to drive on UK roads. I know one of my friends did their lessons and test in Gibraltar if this helps.

Thanks for your quick reply. I might have to look in to teaching spanish pupils to drive, which means i would need to learn Spanish quicker. Again though, does anyone know any driving schools in Spain who i might contact, or any English speaking driving schools over there?
Thanks
Bob.

Not quite sure what you mean there hatchgreen, as we will always be UK citizens, whereever we live! If your friends were spanish residents then they can take their tests in Spain and also take the theory in English if they so wish. Also if people speak no Spanish, they can have a bilingual friend with them in the car when taking their practical lessons and test.

sunshinedrive, maybe it would be a good idea to talk to some of the driving schools on the mainland and see if they employ english speaking instructors? I live in the Canaries, so can't help re the mainland, but here on Lanzarote I know of no english driving instructors.

There is an "English" Driving school just opened in Torviscas in Tenerife.

However you still have to have a Spanish Examiner on your test.

yes, i have seen the English driving school i think. Is it across from the Torviscas Playa hotel? We always go there on holiday and last time we were there i saw the signs from the main road but could'nt find the office. Will have to have a better look next September when we return.

I think an English speaking driving instructor in Spain would be a great idea. I work around the Costa del Sol and the number of people from the UK I come across who will not drive because they are worried amazes me. It almost isolates these poor people as they are terrified of the roads and rules.

You would need to learn Spainish which you are doing and obviously learn about the areas you work in, but then you could advertise in local papers an English instructor helping ex-pats adapt to Spanish driving. I have certainly never come across anyone doing this. Look at the SUR on the internet and check out their classifieds.

It is very difficult getting work in Spain, speaking the language is a must. So this could maybe be a stepping stone to eventually working for a Spanish company or even working on your own teaching Spanish pupils. A lot of homework could pay of for this project so go for it. You never know, you may end up working just for ex-pats who already drive but not in Spain!!

You would have to speak very good Spanish but there are lots of companies in Spain that offer training in things like becoming a driving instructor, they teach you, then get you though the exams you need. CCC is one company, CEAC is another. They are aimed at the Spanish, but hey, it's somewhere to start. Also get yourself a copy of the Spanish Highway code, they have it in english aswell.

Spanish Highway code item 2.4. Roundabouts...

"When reaching the roundabout you should

.1 Give priority to traffic approaching from your left, Especially Canarian drivers, as they don't know the first thing about navigating a roundabout!

.2 Check whether road markings allow you to enter the roundabout without giving way. If so, proceed, but still look out for mad Canarian drivers before joining!

.3 Watch out for vehicles already on the roundabout; be aware that if they are Canarian they may not be signalling correctly or at all.

.4 Look forward before moving off to make sure traffic in front has moved off. If they have not, even though their access is clear, assume they are Canarian and drive round them waving your fist!

:rofl Love it!!!!! :rofl
The one you have missed off is:

Do Not under any circumstances use the inside lane on a roundabout, you will never, ever be able to exit, again, especially in the Canaries!!!

I know a lady that has recently moved to the COsta Blanca near me. She was an instructor in English. She told me she can be paid 28 euros for 45 minutes driving. As this is a large ex pat area she could do quite well.

Do not know much more till see her agin in the new year. i believe she could buy a dual control car and do all the practical driving instruction up to exam point when would have to pass over to a Spanish instructor. this all what she told me so unsure if correct.

But it was a Spanish joke!

Se vende - Ford Fiesta - intermitentes a estrenar.

Translation: For sale - Ford Fiesta - indicators brand new.

It's lost quite a lot in the translation, hasn't it?
