Hi all, I have no experience of redeaming airmiles and have heard that it is far easier to gain them than use them. The situation we are in is that when we arrive in Durban this year we will have gained enough airmiles for an upgrade to business class, so will this be possible for the return leg? We have flown each year with Air France and this year we fly with Air France to Durban from Edinburgh but return with KLM(now owned by Air France) So we are hoping we can call them from Durban and gain an upgrade or get it at check in as I am 6 foot 7 and really struggle with economy class but the wallet will not allow anything else.
Does anyone think we have a chance of an upgrade with our earned miles and what is the best way to go about it.
Many thanks in advance.
Barry.
Agree it is more difficult to spend them than save them, everytime I have tried to use they say no availability or not enough time allowed or something similar, if you ring they say check website which doesn't always give enough info and when I rang and asked about upgrades I was told that you can only upgrade if it has been booked through them though these things sometimes depend on who you are speaking to if you know what I mean, always worth a call though - good luck.
Also Airline web site showed no availability for the dates I travel in Apil/May yet I booked easily with a travel agent and all of them I tried showed availability so how could I book directly with the airline?
Hoping there may be a possibilty so any more tips or advice please feel free to let me know no matter how small it is.
I've managed to redeem some star alliance miles for a return trip to Vegas in business class. Flying from Man, I have to make a stop in Philadelphia and stay just 13 nights but it was worth being flexible to get the deal I wanted. 13 nights is more than enough there in any case On this occasion I booked it at the end of December 05, the return flight is towards the end of Oct 06. Of course it helps if you have a top quality booking agent to help you but that is luck of the draw unfortunately.
Using miles can be a battle but the best things to do are phone up excatly 11 months prior to when you intend to return, enquire as to availability and most of all, be flexible.
Have to say that is my experience with BA miles. I try to book as soon as the dates I want are available for booking. I don't expect to get the exact dates I want either. However, I have not used miles to upgrade.
