International Animal Rescue is the main one in Goa. Met the founder last week, had a film crew with him so can't be doing too bad. Although at the moment we're doing quite well for an animal charity as we have a cat and now a dog... The dog was left just at our gate... (pup, 5? weeks old... - likes to chew your toes...) :?

Thanks for that Rob. I've checked out their website and got the address. Also found GSPCA on the net. They sound worthwhile too. Your dog and cat will be fun for the kids to play with. I've met loads of friendly dogs but I've never met a friendly cat in Goa. Any I've come across have been very wary of people and scared.

hi there
as said international animal rescue are the main guys for animal welfare in goa........i always donate to them every year & give a little extra when i come back from my trip.
i contacted them via email after our last hol as id spotted a dog with a badly broken front leg & eye infection hanging round candolim & also a calf that used to come to the resteraunt near the magnum hotel for bread every night that had a tether tied tightly round its leg making it lame - we tried to get the tether off but couldnt
iar emailed me back straight away & apparently the dog is well known to the rescue centre & they were sending their large animal vet to find the calf as soon as he got back from a project in anjuna.....your post has reminded me to email them & get an update.
you can visit the iar rescue centre & any donation large or small is ALWAYS most greatfully received.
a lot of hotels have literature on the rescue centre in goa & if you look for international animal rescues website you can get more info

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like IAR do a good job. It's nice to hear about people who've had direct contact with the charities.

yes they are a good charity.. I volunteered years ago there as they are always desperate for dog walkers and just people to generally help out. WHen I was there the centre were doing as much as they could but there didnt seem to be much on the volunteer side and I think what a lot of the animals in there needed was a bit of love and affection - the majority of the workers there are locals and just do their job in cleaning and neutering and a cuddle often goes amiss..so if anyone wants to help out there.. i think thats what is lacking..

Hi my mum and dad are in Goa at the moment, when she phoned she said she had been to an animal rescue center and said they were doing a good job, but they really did need more volunteers :(
perhaps when i go i will make a visit, she said that the dogs come and sleep under your sunbed on the beach and one dog has sat with them for the last week! knowing my mum she will want to bring it home with her.

the I.A.R. do great work, helping as many dogs as possible, they were great to us in getting rani home,it was one of the kennel boys who took rani in for us till we could get her home.mario the dog walker is a lovely man,we always take him galaxy chocolate over with us when we go.
when mick went over to arrange rani,s homecoming he took a suitcase full of distempa shots and vets bandages with him,
does anyone know if the english couple who run the discos and quizs still raise money for the rescue
