I'm a newcomer to this website and it's great for information and recommendations! I'm going to Goa for the 1st time on April 13th and I'm really excited but having read a lot of posts on this forum, also a bit concerned.
I wanted to go somewhere away from the "brits abroad" scenario. I know I'm staying in one of the most touristy bits (Calangute-only as a base!), but please reassure me that it's not all bad!
Some of the complete disregard to the culture and beliefs of another country I have read about really shocked me! It's a bit embarrassing to read of peoples disrespect for behaviours different to their own. I don't want to be tarred with the same brush that all westerners/brits act inappropriately.
It's such a shame that the minority consider somewhere like this to be solely for their holidaying pleasure and fail to understand that they are privileged visitors in someone else's country.
(sorry rant over )
Nicola
We are flying from Gatwick I think, my friend has booked it all so I'm a little hazy on the details!!
p.s If you do find the beach a bit crowded(which i very much doubt at that time of year) you could always ask a taxi driver to take you to manderim beach(think thats how its spelt). It costs about 500 rupees return which is about £7 i think. It is still in north Goa but not in the tourist part. Its gorgeous, really quiet, and theres virtually no one else there except you and a beach shack.
Have fun
You do get the odd "Brits Abroad" scenario but to be perfectly honest you don't see very much of it. You hear more from the locals - "lovely jubbly; cheap as chips" that sort of thing. For some reason most Goans seem to think everyone in England speaks with a cockney accent but I guess it's only a reaction to what they hear.
I think perhaps the odd 1 or 2 stand out a bit more because the place is so laid back.
As others have said you are going right at the end of the season so there shouldn't be that many people around in any case and even if there was there are plenty of places to get away from it all.
You'll have a great time!
Glad there a plenty of places to escape everyone and hopefully going at this time of year will prove to be a good choice!
I can go back to being very excited now!!!
