La Palma?

By strange coincidence a friend was asking the same question the other day. I think JMC (as was ) used to run a direct charter service, but nowadays you have to fly via Madrid and go with Iberia. Or you can pick up a local flight from either Tenerife or Gran Canaria.

I've never been but another friend has and it's meant to be a lovely island, very lush and relatively undeveloped.
Fascinating fact (no, really): It's also the island with the side of the volcano that, when it eventually slips into the Atlantic, will supposedly cause a tidal wave large enough to engulf the US eastern seaboard.

I'd love to spend a few days on La Palma and El Hierro. I know some cruises do a short stopover there, but it would be nice to spend a few days there and really explore. I'm sure some of the Tenerife residents on this forum will be able to tell you more about travel between the islands.
We did a day trip over to La Gomera last August and it was a fascinating little island, very different to Tenerife. Our tour guide took us to a 'mirador' where we could see La Palma island in the distance. The Sovereign brochure has a couple of lovely hotels on Gomera, but you have to fly to Tenerife and then get a boat over there.
Anyway, while we're on the subject of islands in the distance - can any of you Tenerife residents tell me any more about San Borondon?

It's worth noting that most flights from the UK to Tenerife fly into Tenerife South but the inter-island flights to La Palma leave from Tenerife North which necessitates a fairly long taxi ride between airports. As the ferries for La Palma leave from Los Christianos just a short ride for the La Reine Sofia airport there quite often isn't much of time saving to be made by flying on to La Palma and you might as well spend the time relaxing on the big car ferry which plies between the two islands and treat it as part of the holiday.

Excel airways said they are going to start flying there direct, but don't yet, shame. :(

Like you said it would be quite nice to relax on the ferry for an hour or so, so guess we'll have to wait and see if dh agrees! :D

If not, we may just wait a few years so we can fly there direct.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Mrs Moo,

It's probably more like 2 hours on the Olsen express ferry from Los Christianos on Tenerife to Santa Cruz on La Palma. Both Armas and Trasmediterranea operate ferries to La Palma too but their routes leave from Santa Cruz on Tenerife which is not really convenient for people flying into Tenerife South from the UK and anyway this is probably a longer crossing into the bargain too.
