Hi

Heres a selection of local goodies - how easily you can get them is another matter. As the previous poster said its easier to get fish & chips, burgers and English Breakfasts!!!

As a starter or snack: Pa amb oli: country bread rubbed with ramallet tomato and dressed with a few drops of olive oil. Its as simple as it is delicious! Sobrassada: this tasty Mallorcan sausage acquires its characteristic deep red colour just by adding paprika or cayenne pepper. It is used in many traditional dishes. Cargols: snails cooked in a wine and herb stock, served with all i oli (garlic mayonnaise). As a main course: Frit mallorquí: lightly fried pork or lamb offal mixed with fennel, pepper and fresh vegetables which are fried separately. Pollastre i gambes: chicken and prawn stew. Llom amb col: pork loin fillet wrapped in cabbage leaves, baked in the traditional Mallorcan stone ovens, with raisins, pine kernels and small pieces of morcilla (a sausage similar to black pudding). Porcella: suckling pig. The great favourite among the meats. Mariscada: an abundant selection of fish and seafood. Variety for all tastes! Arros brut: casserole of chicken, rabbit and vegetables. Tumbet: vegetarian dish slightly spicy- structured in layers, with aubergines, peppers and potatoes in tomato sauce. Sopes mallorquines: stew of cabbage and vegetables of the season with pork.

Hope this gives you some ideas

A good idea, if you wish to try local foods is to go inland away from the tourist resorts, there is some local food info here http://www.a2zmallorca.com/detail/64.htm

As mentioned by the previous posters, the food is very english orientated (possibly due to the amount of people who go abroad and moan about eating foreigh muck????? if you want fish and chips, go on holiday to blackpool......lol). In saying this, if you happen to stay in a german orientated resort. hope you like brockwurst, guess the germans moan as well?
Carmel mentioned the Sobrassada (mallorcan sausage), when we stayed in s`illot the nearby burger bar served this (usually with sliced warm baguette) makes a lovely night time snack. One small problem with it due to the spiciness...........you tend to still be enjoying it on the beach the following afternoon. Not that this put us of much as we tended to stop in nearly every night on the way back to the hotel for more.

Try and find a local restaurant, usually out of town by the side of the road. These restaurants are usually quite big, with huge car parks, and get very busy around dinner time, with truckers and families. This is because they serve "Menu of the Day", or Menu Del Dia. For a set price, usually something cheap like 8 euros, you get a starter, main course, dessert, wine, fizzy drinks, water and Mallorcian bread. And you can have as much as you like. Agree about the earlier comment with the pork, the pork and indeed the lamb dishes are very nice. The Mallorcian bread is gorgeous, no additives but ask for alioli to go on it, this is a garlic mayonayse.

English is spoken much in these places, but staff are friendly. The places get very busy by 12 so go early. You can spot the best ones by the number of cars and lorries in the car parks! They offer excellent value for money, infact, its hard to know how they do it for the price. The food is very good, and traditional. We always go to these places in Mallorca, where else can you have a 3 course meal and drinks for 8 euros, though prices to vary.

Also nice is a emsomada - apologies if spelt wrong, but is a very light pasty swirl with icing sugar on the top, sweet, light and very moreish. Usually found in all bakeries and some supermarkets if baked fresh. You can even buy them in Palma airport to take home in a box if you like!
