I haven't actually stayed in the Maenporth Beach Resort,
however I did stay in a caravan park just a mile or so up the road.
I did see the resort and it looked (from the outside) to be nice.

The beach is lovely, very quiet and there are many nice coastal walks.
So far as the nearby area, Falmouth isn't much to write home about.
Its a sprawling residential town, pretty rough and not much to look at
except for maybe the actual town area near to the docks.

However you are pretty well positioned here to explore Cornwall
and for example recommend the hour drive to Boscastle and Tintagel.
One point though, wouldn't recommend Lands End - too touristy.
From Maenporth its still around 1-2 hours and really is not worth it.

Hope this helps!

thanks for that info sea of gold - agree about Falmouth - we went there last year while satying in lostwithal, well the castle atually but called into the town on the way back and cant say i was that impressed. But as you say it is probably a good base as nowhere in cornwall would presumably be that far :D. We were actually looking for a cottage with something to keep the children occupied later when we return home and always manage to find something with a pool or games room but couldnt seem to find anything to fit this criteria further down into cornwall accept maenporth so maybe its worth another look :D :D . plenty around the at austell area where we were last year but wanted to try somewhere else :D

Cheers Lyn,
If you are looking for a cottage can recommend Pendra Loweth, which are about a mile or so from Maen Porth.
Not your traditional cottage, but instead very stylish and clean.

Their web-page is as follows:-
http://www.pendra.co.uk/index.htm

We stayed there last year, and there is a small club house which caters for meals if you want to eat "in."
Plus there was (I'm pretty sure?) a small pool of some description.
There were also some tennis courts to keep the kids busy.

The couple that ran the place were exceedingly friendly, and the cottages had all "mod cons" as needed for your stay.
All in all, a very friendly and peaceful place to stay. Check it out! :gluck

thanks for that sea of gold - i have to say i dont remember seeing them when i was searching - and i spent days. they look good and again very reasonable. I will send for their details for maybe next year - i did eventually book a different cottage slightly further along from where we stayed last year - this is where we're going http://www.poltarrow.co.uk looks lovely and has a pool and games room but it was a little more than i wanted to pay for an extra weeks holiday. but it is in august. :( oh so many lovely places to choose and not enough time and money to do it all :( :(

Hi there

Ive been on holiday to the Maenporth Estate 3 times in the last 4 years and can honestly say we've had our best ever family holidays there!

It really is a cut above the average self-catering holiday.

The cottages are superbly finished with lovely kitchens and bathrooms, the grounds are beautifully landscaped and great for the children to run around. The indoor pool is great, we thought it would be a good fallback, but we've never had bad weather when we've been there. Last year we went during the July heatwave, it was so hot it was hard to believe we were in England.

Have just booked 2 weeks there in July, fingers crossed for the weather"¦

I agree totally. One of the best places I have ever stayed at. Would recommend it thoroughly.

We know the Falmouth area very well, having been regular visitors for some 30 years!

Although we have never stayed at Maenporth Resort, we have looked around it and the facilities are good and the location is excellent - although a little more remote than some people may prefer.

However, we have stayed several times at Pendra Loweth, which is halfway between Maenporth and Falmouth. There are a number of different styles of cottage - 2-bedroom, 3-bedroom and 3-bedroom with en-suite. We found a particular cottage that we can highly recommend - the website for it is: http://www.holiday-in-cornwall.com - and have made return visits! On-site facilities include 3 tennis courts, a plunge pool, exercise room and a cafe/bar.

Whichever you choose, the possibilities for exploring the whole of Cornwall are enormous - the north coast is only 20 miles away and it is around 40 miles to the Eden Project. Falmouth town centre represents both a working port and a tourist resort, with many traditional shops as well as the larger chain stores. We find it quite an attractive town, with much to see and do. Highly recommended!
