There is a huge International Scout camp immediately to the southern edge of Kandersteg which my son visited last year - when it's full it can accomodate over 1000 scouts - roughly as many as the population of Kandersteg itself!! There are certainly plenty of decent hiking trails - with overnight hikers huts if you are brave enough in winter!!! - can't comment on the skiing however - but his photos are spectacular - views of the Matterhorn and easy access to Berne on the lake as well

The link to the scout site has some comments on local activities in winter which presumably are widely available (fancy caving under a glacier ??) - may be helpful possibly ???
