We live in Scotland but always go away(also in Scotland) for New Year week so will try to help.

Either self catering or a hotel last time we stayed in Loch Lomond we stayed in a B&B which we enjoyed, i would like to stay somewhere like Loch Lomond or even Fort William where there are things to do, Not sure what other places there are other than there! Dont fancy the idea of staying in the city like to be out in the wilderness!

We have just booked to stay in what looks like a lovely B&B in Crianlarich. It's called the Riverside B&B. I am bringing a small group of 7 people from Canada and we have booked 4 rooms in June; although I haven't been there it looked nice enough to make me decide. It might be too close to where you were before as it is near Loch Lomond of course. But have a look and see what you think. If you do go there please let me know later what you thought.

What about the Aviemore area? Its quite a small town but right in the middle of the Cairngorms and lots to do. Its very geared up for tourists, with lots of hotels, B& B's etc as well as pubs, shops etc. Theres the skiing and snowboarding and also the reindeer centre. Its the place most likely to get snow in Scotland, unlike the areas you mention which are in the west and tend to be damp.

We used to stay at the Coylumbridge hotel regularly. Think its a Hilton now. Great facilities, wonderful views of the mountains.

I suggest you buy the "Sunday Post" newspaper and in the holiday section you will find loads of places doing special deals for both Xmas and Hogmany ( new Year )

One I do know that does a really good deal is the Star Hotel at Kingussie (approx 16 miles from Aviemore ) Xmas and New Year is brillant up there.

The Star hotel is advertised through BREADALANE GROUP and they have it every week in the Sunday post.

Hi tatty, We are going away this Christmas to a log cabin in the middle of no where, we have been there before and it really nice, only problem there are no curtains except for the bedroom, which is a bit scary at night. The cabins about 10 miles from Fort Williams. We found it by just serching on the net for cottages and cabins in Scotland, but they only have two. Its like another world in the highlands so different to where I live, I love it there but never been for Christmas before. Have you found any where to go yet, did it snow last time you were in Scotland for Christmas?

Hi Tatty, beware of the Coylumbridge hotel, went there 5 years ago and I agree with Bridd lovely hotel, beautiful views etc. However we took my two grandaughters there last August what a change, did not reconise the place. We had a suite, it was very basic,not very clean in fact one of the toilets had not been cleaned from the previous guests and every time we had a bath it leaked out all over the floor.The food was terrible and the second night we ate out. One of the swimmings pools was very cloudy,it was such a shame as it was the first time the girls had been to a hotel, and although it cost us a fortune we would not have minded if the hotel had been good. There are plenty of nice hotels in the Highlands and you will have a great time over new year.

I was really sorry to hear about the Coylumbridge hotel, Londongirl. We have such good memories of the place, it's realy sad it's gone downhill.

Hi Bridd yes did complain,room was recleaned and paint put on the hole in the bath!!. Did not want to be down at reception all the holiday complaining as the idea was to have fun with my Grandchildren but took it up with Hilton on my return, imediatly gave me the offer of a free suite next time we wanted to return to the hotel (could not fault them there) but don't think that we will be taking them up on their offer, to many nicer places to go to. I think that the hotel was upmarket when it was built when owned by Stakis. We spent many lovely holidays there, but Hilton has let it go,it badly needs refurbishment. Its a shame as the location is fantastic. Will post a review soon.

Tatty, how about the Hetland Hall Hotel? It's a country house type of place, with its own indoor pool, near Dumfries (near the border). I have stayed there myself over Christmas, and can thoroughly recommend it.
