Hi all
I have left this very late, but there has been a last minute change of plan! Basically we are heading off to Italy next week (Tuesday), flying into Naples. We have 4 spare days before we then drive down to Maratea for 1 week(we are hiring a car). Ideally I want to go somewhere south of Naples, so it is at least on the way to Maratea, but not so far that it is a stupidly long drive (we are flying with Alitalia and the flight times and connections are a joke) as we will be tired. Having looked on the net, I think Salerno may be a good bet. It looks pretty close to Naples, and also some other places of interest, but having never been before am unsure as to what to expect.
I was wondering if anyone has been, and what they thought of it.
Is it a good place?
Is it expensive?
Does anyone know of any decent hotels that are not a small fortune?
THanks in advance
Jo
I've been to Salerno on a day trip. Although there has been a town established there since time immemorial, much of Salerno was virtually flattened during the allied landings in the second world war, so most of the town is fairly modern and can for this reason appear less charming than other places nearby. However there are some hotels although I can't make any personal recommendations having never stayed over there. The town is not as geared up for tourism though as say Sorrento so I found that I had to use my language skills more here. Have you considered staying at Vietri sul Mare which is fairly close to Salerno (just at the start of the Amalfi drive) which may be a more quaint place to stay, although probably considerably more expensive than Salerno. I believe there is an "agriturismo" place near Paestum which is part of the slow food movement which might be a bit special if you want to eat well. I'll try to find the name if you post back to me on this site.
