The problem is I believe not the hiring but that the local police if you are stopped will not accept the paper part you must produce both parts including the photocard and I believe there is a stiff fine for failing to do so.

Peter can I ask do you what happens if you only have the old pink licence. I don't have a photo bit and always hire a car when we are away. Now I am worried.

I seem to recall that they used to accept the old pink as a full license until very recently but they are now insisting on the photocard type.

Unless the change is very recently then the old pink license is OK.

At least it was in January of this year as my husband does not have a photo license either.

We hired a car in March and still accepted old style licences then.

Thanks everyone, accepted my pink one last Oct., but we didnt hire in Feb and thought maybe I'll have to get a new style one.

Hi

Just to confirm - have read yesterday in newspaper that pink ones are still accepted. It is only if you have the really old all green ones that you then need to apply for a driving permit.
