Am visiting Bulgaria for the first time, staying in Sunny Beach. I always like to try local food. Does anyone have any recommendations for places to eat and what dishes to try?
Alio
As for local dishes, try these -
Shopska salad - mixed salad covered in shaved feta-style cheese, ususally offered as a starter
Kvarma - a (usually) thick stew with meat & onions, served in a bowl
Kebapche - a spicy cross between a sausage & a burger
Kebapcheta - smaller version of above, more like large (flat) meatballs, you will normally be asked how many you want
These are just a few, there are loads more, and I'm sure you will get a lot of answers with personal favourites
As has been said before regarding restaurant recommendations, in Bulgaria (or even in your local area), one that may have been great last year could have changed hands and be less than wonderful this year, so many of us tend to be reticent about giving recommendations.
For a few examples of Bulgarian cuisine, you could have a look HERE, HERE or HERE.

Also the Windmill restaurant isvery good it is out along the main road heading up behind the Fiesta Beach Hotel.
Very few of the resort restaurants actually do serve really authentic cuisine, its usually modified to the western european taste.
My own personal favourites are off the regular tourist areas and dont even have a menu other than in Bulgarian.

Just read your reply is'nt half the fun of any Mehana trying to read the Bulgarian menu and enjoying real tasty food not the tourist brand of food
Yes its great fun, our favourite Mehana (or mexican restaurant as many tourists who have no idea of cyrillic think) only has hand-written menus and as you will know there's a big difference between that and the printed word but we have no problem even with that.
One of our greatest delights is watching the faces of the Bulgarians as we order in Bulgarian.

are there any supermarkets in sunny beach.i am staying at the sun village apartments
I can only speak for Golden Sands but as both resorts are purpose built resorts the facilities in both will be the same.
The mini-markets stock basic tea, coffee bread and biscuits etc. but dont expect to be able to buy real meat, veg and potatoes its mainly deli type stuff. They also sell cigs alcohol toiletries and beach gear.

As Patka says, just like Golden Sands, you will find lots of mini markets in Sunny Beach.
Supermarkets, such as Piccadilly, Billa, Metro, etc., will generally be located in larger towns/cities like Bourgas or Varna.

Generaly hotel food is not great we found the small restaurants up by the market very good in both quality and price compared to the seafront and center of sunny beach. Also they have Bulgarians eating and drinking there !
Hi Patka just read your post and thinking about Mehanas and even in Sunny Beach when we start to order of a Bulgarian only menu we usually get first the stares and then the comment of Oh the scots you speak Bulgarian (although not great but good enough to be understood) and what a difference is makes when you can say please and thank you in Bulgarian
There is a quaint resteraunt in the hills called Miami at St Vlas. They do more of a Bulgarian menu than you would find on the resort.
Most taxi drivers know where it is. Last year it cost 28 leva there & back, about £9. let them know what time you want picking up & they will be there waiting for you. Just agree the price before you get in the taxi.
Djannys is a really good place to eat as well. It is across the main road, past the market. The locals eat there & it is fairly cheap. The only down fall is you do have to wait a bit longer than most places, as it is very popular.
Hope this helps & have a really good time.

Thanks to everyone for their advice. Only 4 days to go and we will be able to try out ourselves
