Hi,
My girlfriend and I are thinking about a holiday to Menorca in September as we're looking for a peaceful and relaxing week in a relatively unspoilt place. However, neither of us drive so would have to rely on public transport to get around.
Does anyone think that not having a car would seriously limit us? Does anyone know how reliable and frequently buses run and whether there are some places that aren't served by public transport at all? Also, are there any resorts in particular that people can recommend as being suitable for people without a car?
We'd like to see as much of the island as possible but if we'd be limited by not driving then we'll maybe wait a couple of years when hopefully one of us will have learnt to drive by then!
Thanks
The bus service is not brilliant for getting across the island, you would be limited to only a few per day.
We have stayed at Es Castell which is a little town with its own harbour (but not much beach). Plenty to see there and you can get the bus from there to Mahon (which isn't far away).
Arenal d'en Castell has a lovely beach and scenery and you can stroll from one end to the other and round the headlands, but there's not much else to visit nearby.
I think Santo Tomas is a larger resort with shops etc and beach.
I'm sure you will get more answers.
We never drive on holiday.....you can still have a good time without a car!
You can usually book tours from your resort, either from your reps or a local travel firm.
hi,stayed at barcelo hamilton in es castell 05,doing the same this year.no car not a problem.public transport is quite adequate.depending on where you are staying you can easily see a lot of the island using local buses and cheaply as well.from es castell we would take a bus to the bus depot in mahon and from there most places are accessible,eg apart from a short walk from the depot into mahon center other places you could travel to are citudella, cala fornells, binnibecar, punta prima, most of the inland places and notable coastal resorts are easily reached by public transport.a good one is to es mercadal (center of the island) for the market and also el toro (near to es mercadal) which is the highest point on the island for great views.the bus service from the airport to the depot in mahon is also good.bus fares are relativley cheap and timings are ok.chuck
There are plenty of taxi's around and I would suggest that you ask for a price before getting in, to be honest we got the taxi into citadella a few times it's was really not much more expensive than the bus for three of us.
As mentioned you will also be able to do trips organised by the reps but we found them to be quite expensive, although we did have a very good time on the one we went on.
Good luck and don't let the thought of no car put you off.
