Take a look at http://www.kanchanaburi-info.com/en/muang.html

The three things that should be on your list are the war cemetary in the middle of town, 6800+ POW graves; the JEATH museum- it will give your kids an idea of what your Dad & others went through; and the train from Kanchananburi - Nam Tok (if you've got time). This goes along the original railway which was built by POWs towards the Burmese border & stops near Erawan waterfall.

Christmas Day and Boxing Day are not Buddhist holidays so shops, sites etc., should be open.

agree with what macfarang says. We did all these on a day tour. The JEATH camp and the cemetary are very moving. I shed a few tears reading the graves. The train journey is breathtaking.
