DIY Holidays

Discussion relating to DIY holidays

It's rare for private owners to provide this sort of luggage storage facility and night flights on a DIY are not a good idea for this same reason. I've done a lot of DIY self-catering and the ideal arrangement is to book flights which enable you to arrive at your final destination late afternoon so you're not hanging around waiting for the villa or apartment to become available but can get in immediately. This usually means that the return flights are timed so that you can leave your accommodation mid-morning and get to the airport in time for check-in for a mid-afternoon departure. Night flights usually mean that you're either hanging around most of the day waiting to get into your accommodation and/or you're lumbered with your bags on your last day unless you're flying with a scheduled operator that will let you check-in your bags early and then go into the nearest town for a look around etc.

The only time night flights have worked for me is when going with a flexible operator to La Gomera where I rent from a very flexible agent/owner and so we haven't been tied to the usual 7 or 14 day charter deal. We were able to get as late a flight as possible to Tenerife, arrive in the very early morning and have breakfast at Tenerife South before getting a taxi to Los Christianos for the first ferry of the day over to La Gomera and then get straight into our apartment. On the last day we then got the last ferry of the day back to Tenerife in time to check-in for what was probably the last flight of the day leaving to the UK. But even then I do much prefer being able to book flights which enable us to do things the opposite way around - an outbound flight which arrives in Tenerife at the latest in time to get the last ferry of the day from LC and a return flight which leaves late enough for us to get the first ferry of the day from La Gomera to LC.

As an owner of holiday accommodation, who is on site, I would be happy for guests to leave their baggage with me while they enjoyed their last day.
I would suggest asking the question when you make your initial enquiry about the property. I would imagine that you will find most owners would be helpful if it's at all possible for them.
There is a new listing site for holiday rentals called -- removed by MarkJ HT Mod --. This site will only take ads from owners who really care about their guests. The site is due to be launched sometime next month and would be worth looking at. At the moment there are only a few properties on it, but it's sure to grow.
Good luck with your holiday plans.

Carol, if you have a look around the resort you will probably find that there are rooms with showers etc available to rent for the last day. Just make sure that you have a look around before you book and pay as some can be real dumps!

Our last diy holiday and the one we are doing for September we have booked our apartment for an extra night. It wasn,t expensive and it gives you the use of the apartment until you leave for the airport. We arranged to have the apartment checked on our last day and collect our deposit. We left the keys on the kitchen table as arranged. No problem.

If you have a train station nearby you could always check their facilities for lockers!

All very useful advice folks
This definately seems workable with a bit of careful planning, so long as I stick to the popular "budget airline" routes such as the Costas which all seem to have an abundance of keen to rent private owners.
Thanks

If I am flying to Alicante I generally try to get the earliest morning flight out, usually about 7a.m. This is because (I think) delays build up during the day and the least likely flight to be delayed is the first one, since they've had a few hours break at night to catch up. A bonus is that the return flight is then generally about noon, so no hanging about after vacating the apartment.
When we've taken later flights, the apartment agency we use has allowed us to leave suitcases in a room at the back of the office, although they don't advertise this service. You just have to make sure you won't need to retrieve them during their interminable lunch break :)
If you hire a car then all the problems disappear, just put the cases in the boot and then drive away and repark so no-one knows they are in there.
