9 days in to a 14 day holiday based in a villa in S'Algar with a hire car
We have two kids - a 6 year old and a 2 year old
So far this is what we have done in no particular order:
Daytime:
Binibeca beach - fishing in the rockpools and lunch at the cafe 5 yards from the sea
Alcaufar beach - fishing in the rockpools and lunch at the tapas bar (about 300 yards from the beach) - highly recommended
A visit to the llocdemenorca a zoo not far from mahon suitable for younger children - lots of domestic animals - some of which they can pet - we also had a pizza lunch there
A visit to Castillo not far from Cuidadella - the base of a big LLadro shop but the reason for going is the superb family fun park behind it that is FREE to enter - includes trampolines, a pool with water slides, bumper boats, numerous playgrounds, crazy golf, mini go karts and lots more - my wife could not believe that it was free to enter - highly recommended - some of the mechanical rides need 1 euro to operate and the crazy golf is 2 euros but if you wanted a free day out there are plenty of other things to keep your children happy - we also had lunch there
I also went next door and took the kids (one at a time) on the adult go kart track 15 euros per double kart - they loved it but they are very fast and you need to be careful
A trip to Mahon market - plenty to see and do here (the kids had a donkey ride each in the square) followed by a drive to es castell where we had lunch at dinkums restaurant which is run by a very helpful quite eccentric English guy. From right outside his restaurant we caught a glass bottom boat trip around the harbour with personal commentary
A trip to son bou where both our children even the two year old went on the water slides - the two year old accompanied by myself !
6 euros for 10 slides - the two year old was free because he went down with me - we are going back this week for more plus there is a great maze there for the kids - for those looking for a rsort suitable for children I highly recommend Son Bou and in particular the Saint Jaime complex
A visit to La Rueda tapas restaurant in Saint Luis - in my opinion the most authentic tapas bar on the island - absolutely full of locals - we ate there on a Tuesday lunchtime - there was a real buzz to the place
Evening:
A trip to the trotting races near Saint Luis - 5 Euros each for adults - our kids walked in free (not sure if they should have paid or not) - another fun experience for all of the family - It takes part Saturday evenings at 6pm understand there is something similar near Cuidadella on Sunday evenings
Fantastic meal at es caragol restaurant overlooking the sea on the road between binibeca and punta prima - first night we tried there it was full up so we booked for the next night - a lady brought a tray of feshly caught fish to the table for us to select from - some fish on the menu were not available simply because they hadn't been caught that day - that is how fresh the fish is !! The night was made unforgettable by a lightning storm that was taking place far out to sea - better than any firework display you could ever see
Superb Chinese/japanes style meal at the Asia restaurant in S'algar - highly recommended - better than anything we have tried in England by far
Great Indian meal at Taj restaurant in mahon - great setting to on the outside terrace which is bordered by a cliff side
El Picadero - nice carvery restaurant near saint luis - English owned and worth a visit - plenty of choice - 27 euros for adults but that includes as much wine and soft drinks as you can manage and unlimited trips to the carvery - children cost 2 euros per year of their age
2 nice meals at the piccolo mundo in Alcalfar - great views across the bay to s'algar and they have an enclosure with 14 tortoises which the kids enjoy
Our 6 year old girl has eaten:
White fish (including the heads and tails)
Blue fish (including heads and tails)
Grilled sardines
Prawns
Mussels
Crab
Paella
Anyway to sum it up - do not ever let anybody tell you there is nothing to do in menorca for kids - ours love it and we have still got 5 days left !!
I`m going in October with my Husband and our 7 year old were staying at Punta prima at the Sur Menorca all inclusive. I can`t wait after reading this. The tapas sound fab will be giving them a try. The things to do with kids sound fab too.
Enjoy the rest off your stay and anything else thats good tell us know.
If you find a good wine to wash the Tapas down let us know.
Christine
sounds fantastic - glad you are having such a good time!
